BATMAN RETURNS (1992) - Movie Commentary WATCH ALONG!!

Comments

This was my least favorite of the original four Bat-movies and considering how Batman Forever and Batman and Robin went, that's saying something. I think it's because those last two movies were intentionally goofy and this one tried to be serious. Batman '89 was great. This to me was not. Michael Keaton was barely in his own movie. Michelle Pfeiffer's acting skill saved what to me was a horrible reimagining of Catwoman (and they had the balls to take this exact same concept for the Halle Berry version and then wondered why it flopped). Danny DeVito is a great actor- I was just grossed out by this reimagining of Penguin. And despite being an avid comic book reader from way back, I just could not suspend my disbelief enough to accept penguins living in Gotham's sewers. How did they get down there? Diid they escape from the zoo? It felt to me like Burton was trying too hard. There's enough in the Penguin character to make him a strong character- turning him into a "monster" was a bad choice and having him raised by penguins in the sewer was ridiculous. And why the hell would Bruce unmask in front of anyone who didn't already know, much less a huge criminal like Max Shreck? That made no sense- to me that's another example of a bad trope in superhero movies- inappropriate unmasking by someone who is trying to maintain a secret identity (see Spiderman 2 for another example). I know, they need the actor's face in the shot to convey whatever the scene requires. Couldn't they do an x-ray type shot so you can see the face but the secret identity isn't shot to hell? Anyway, my curmudgeonly review aside, I enjoyed your commentary (the only thing that could make me rewatch this movie). Looking forward to you guys doing Batman Forever and Batman and Robin.

I got to hold danny’s nose mold for this movie when moving molds from the studio to storage. Was a huge moment in my life as a makeup artist where i went fuck yeah man. Lmaoo beyond that the movie as a whole is a fever dream. Walken, the clowns, penguin, paul rubbin as his dad its all whacky in the best way especially the push off the building lol. But what a movie!

Woohoo! Finally a movie where I have something to contribute information-wise! It's called a "Hydrofoil watercraft" and you guys were close it's called the "Batskiboat" I had an OBSESSION with this movie as a kid because I loved Catwoman ♥️♥️♥️♥️ My first Danny Devito movie was funnily enough "Junior" I remember watching it as a kid (it was also my first Arnie movie too!) Then came this one and then Matilda (which by the way I think Greg should 100% watch because it feels like a disservice to himself to not watch such a great and iconic movie!!!) And I agree with Greg even though you KNOW it's Danny DeVito playing penguin at the same time Danny feels like he disappears and all I ever see is the character which I guess is just a testament to how amazing of an actor he is ♥️♥️

Adam Savage literally just did a video with an auction house showing off Batman Returns items. They had 2 versions of that remote batarang, the one Batman programs and the one Penguin used to take out the Ice Princess model lady. The one Batman programs actually still works. They also showed one of Keaton's Batsuits. It's a cool watch. Batarang: https://youtu.be/EfX0Z2WBe28?si=ASXDiAHE4LBtSiEx Batsuit: https://youtu.be/TRDaDsPgfhk?si=YYVA8GwZ7mWhnRIT
