GALAXY QUEST (1999) - Movie WATCH ALONG!!

Comments

Wait you guys haven't seen Big Bang Theory? That show made me more of a movie nerd. It's so good. You all should do that as a show reaction if you're not hooked by the end of S1 drop it, but I think you guys would love it. As for this movie, the entire ensemble cast is so great. And all of them were brilliant in this. So under rated

IIRC Tony Shalhoub's character was ACTUALLY supposed to be stoned the entire time. The story of why is actually interesting, and stems from his hesitation playing an Asian character. He stated in an interview -- "Well, I can’t play an Asian guy. I won’t play an Asian guy. But I will play a guy who plays an Asian guy.” So who does he look towards for inspiration? Dean Parisot said to Tony- "“Why don’t you take a look at the pilot for Kung Fu?” You know, the David Carradine show? “Because that was a guy who wasn’t an Asian guy playing an Asian guy.” Per Tony Shalhoub -- "So I watched David Carradine, and then we found out that there was this rumor—I don’t think it was a rumor, I think it was a legend—that David Carradine just smoked a lot of weed on that show. That was the thing. That’s how he was able to channel that kind of Zen, unflappable character. So we decided, “Well, maybe that’s what happened to Fred, too: He just became this kind of burnout.” And then we just kind of rewrote it as we went along. Dean and the writers, we just kind of made it up as we went along, based on that idea: that he’d smoked an enormous amount of pot." So Tony Shalhoub's character on Galaxy Quest is literally baked the entire time. There are little hints through the movie, like him messing with a microwave to presumably nuke some food while the other characters get transported to the ship for the first time, etc. Apparently there were supposed to be some bigger clues, even a deleted scene where he does some drugs in a bathroom, but to keep the PG rating, they didn't make it too obvious.

There is a documentary called "Never Surrender: A Galaxy Quest Documentary" that is a must watch as well. Spoiler there were talks about a sequel but Alan Rickman passed away and the cast decided not to proceed with it.

They did do Star Trek The Next Generation, which started airing in 1987. The end of the movie is a nod to that and the original concept for a new Trek series, one that would've starred the the original cast as an older crew. So they mixed those, with the old cast coming back with new characters on the show. As a long time Star Trek fan, almost 45 years now, having the knowledge of the shows definitely gives the film a deeper dimension. I'm kind of surprised none of you have checked out Trek. The original series, Next Gen, Deep Space Nine and most of Voyager are great. The feature length films are hit and miss, but have some straight 🔥 classics i haven't liked any of the recent Trek series, tho season 3 of Picard was decent.

This is one of my favorite movies ever. They actually made a documentary about this movie. In the documentary they interview some of the next generation cast and they say that they should have done a film like this lol. Side note galaxy quest was voted like the 7th best Star Trek film at a con due to all the write ins lmao.

The Bathroom scene at the convention is based on something that actually happened to William Shatner.
