Fun fact- Not only did Alan Rickman DID know about Snape's trajectory and ending, it's the entire reason he agreed to continue filming past the second or third film. He wanted to leave early in the franchise due to several dissatisfactory components of filming, but JK Rowling revealed to him the rest of the story (that she also knew because she wrote the final part of the story before any of the preceding parts) and convinced him to stay.

What a journey. I love doing these watchalongs with people who haven't watched or seen them as often as I have. Fun to see how close predictions get, like Greg predicting just how deep Harry's connection to the Horcruxes was.
I will forever love these movies. As a book reader, there will always be certain smaller plots that were either just lightly shown, like Lupin and Tonks' romance, or happening in the background that only readers may have caught, such as Percy Weasley (one of Ron's older brothers) turning his back on his family and siding with the Ministry during the events of Order of the Phoenix but finally reconciling at the Battle of Hogwards.
Looking forward to the next chapter of your Wizarding World watch.

In all honesty and this might be an unpopular opinion but I hate watching characters I love die on screen it's not satisfying for me on any level (it's one of the reasons I got scared to continue AOT and I only got through GOT because of the many spoilers so I knew what to expect for every season lol) so I myself appreciate the lack of visuals because all it does is cause me such distress that I'm too distraught to focus so I was and am all for them not showing the deaths of many beloved characters in this franchise because seeing Fred, Remus and Tonks death would have been absolute torture for my mind, body and soul lol 😅
Sad it's over but at the same time I'm so happy because now whenever I'm in a HP mood I always have you (Greg) and Tara to rewatch it with 😁❤️❤️❤️

I don’t disagree that Snape was heroic in some ways, I am more so talking about the labeling him as hero because I think there’s a difference. He still joined a blood purist group that perpetuated extreme hate and violence (and only left because he found out Voldemort was targeting Lily), and still relentlessly bullied children. Snape did do heroic things, but I just disagree with relatively common characterization of him a flat out hero. It’s very nuanced as well because in my opinion, Snape did the right things for morally wrong reasons nearly all the time. But i definitely see your point.

I would argue that your points actually paint Snape in an even more heroic fashion... He helped Harry so many times despite not even liking him. He held love for Lily and protected her son despite her ending up with the guy who bullied him. If anything, it is more impressive that he did all that he did compared to Dumbledore because he had way more reason not to do the right thing.

These are my favorite movies of all time, and although they aren't exactly in line with the books, they are still amazing. There are just two key things that would've made them better for me. I wish they showed Harry and Ginny's relationship more. Harry was deeply in love with Ginny, and her with him. So much so that in the book, the last thing Harry sees before Voldemort "kills" him is Ginny's eyes. She is the last thing he thinks of because she represents what he has always longed for: a future with love and family. His act of giving up this future so that others may have their own future lives, and even so Ginny can start a life with another man, show that Harry understands the true meaning of love and sacrifice in the same way his mother did. His connection and love for Ginny in the books was truly amazing, so I wish the movies matched that (but I still love the movie Harry and Ginny). The only other thing I wish they emphasized in this movie was the Dumbledore x Harry dynamic and the Snape x Harry dynamic. Snape did not love Harry, despite what people might interpret from his memories. When Dumbledore says, "Don't tell me now you've grown to care for the boy," and Snape casts the Patronus, it is because he loves Lily. In that moment, he is saying, "I love Lily," which is why when Dumbledore says "After all this time", Snape responds, "Always." That is the only reason he protects Harry despite resenting and disliking him. Snape was only interested in keeping Lily alive, and by proxy, that meant saving Harry, too. Snape doesn't do everything he does throughout the series because he loves or even cares about Harry as an individual, but because Lily loved Harry and died for him, and Snape loved Lily. A lot of people walk away from this movie thinking Snape was an amazing man, and while he was a great character in the story who did good things, he was not the amazing man people make him out to be. People then look at Dumbledore as a villain who only saw Harry as a disposable way to win the war, but unlike Snape, Dumbledore truly did grow to love and care for Harry and says as much in the fifth book. Dumbledore often distances himself from Harry because he cares for him and doesn't want him to continue suffering, but he can't allow himself to think that way because Harry needs to die. I think if they had made these dynamics more clear, it would've helped people see the complexities in the characters rather than just throwing out the label "hero" and "villain" to characters that dont fit the bill.

Yeah. The movies make him seem like a genuinely good guy doing double agent stuff
In the book he is a genuinely awful guy who did a few good things. And he did those good things for all the wrong reasons lol
He didn’t care at all if Harry or James died. Just that Lilly died.
He essentially became a Nazi just because his crush rejected him. For other reasons too. He genuinely believed in pure blood supremacy. he called Lilly a mud blood.
James did bully Snape. But James was an asshole type guy who matured. Became a hero. Wasnt a bigot.
Snape low key has incel vibes in the books. Lashing out when he doesn’t get his way. And considering he is a massive bigot who called Lilly a slur he low key deserved to be bullied
And then even once he joined the side of good, he still bullied literal
Children
Harry was bad enough. But at least kinda made sense cause he hated James.
But in the books he relentlessly bullies Neville and hermione. And countless others
Hermione had a spell done to her that made her teeth grow long, and he said he didn’t notice a difference
Neville’s worst fear was Snape (that part is in the movie).
Like no child should have their worst fear be their teacher
He didn’t have to do this stuff lol.
Like to keep up appearances I can understand him doing awful things once he become headmaster
But before Voldemort had even returned he had no reason to torment children. He did it causs he liked it
That isn’t to say I don’t like Snape. I do. And I like how complex it is. It’s not necessarily black and white
He did after all contribute to Voldemort’s downfall both times.
That can’t be ignored. But deep down he is a hateful bigot. Maybe he dropped some of that bigotry as he got to know Harry. But I don’t think we can just excuse tormenting children just cause he did good things

these are the few adaptions that while reading the books I genuinely get thoughts of “man the movies suck. They cut out some of the best parts and added so many irrelevant scenes”
But then when I watch the movies I forget all that and get swept up
Like the 6th is my favourite book. And least favourite movie. Because all my favourite parts of the book were cut out. Which actually makes 7 and 8 make less sense. (For example, most of the horcruxes just come out of no where in 7 and 8 in the movie. We see them in 6 in the book). And what annoys me is they ADDED the scene where the burrow burns down just to add some action I guess since there isn’t much in the book. But if we didn’t have that scene there would’ve been more room for some of the important book moments to set up the final movies
But then I watch the movie and I’m like “man I like this lol”
It’s hard to hate the movies because they do a lot right. I always convince myself I hate the movies and then I watch them every 2-3 years and I’m like “never mind”. It’s one of those logical vs emotional things
Logically they changed and removed so much that they’re basically hollow shells of the book.
But emotionally, the acting, the visuals, the sets, the way magic and wonder is depicted, all gets me swept up
Other book adaptions dont do that. They both cut things out, change, and add things, and then also fail as films
These at least are super well made movies. Everyone behind and in front of a camera did such a good job that it’s hard to hate them lol

i could list so many times i genuinely laughed with or absentmindedly responded to a question or comment one of you had made, but that would make for a long, probably boring comment. so i won't. but what i will say is that, given how bleak, what unending misery has seemed to permeate everything we do as of late, i appreciated every moment immensely. i'm so sad it's over. thank you both so much (and the whole behind the scenes team) for these last couple months of sundays. you all brought joy when it feels nearly impossible to cultivate at times, and i am so grateful. <3

If you go back and pay attention to Snape when he is talking to Bellatrix, he said he had deceived one of the best wizzards of all time. Bellatrix acted put off, then he said, Dumbledore is a great wizzard....Those were 2 complete separate sentences. The one he talked about deceiving is Voldamort. He was supurb at Occlumency. That's how he was able to deceive Voldemort.

Never read the books, but these movies were a true staple of my childhood that helped mold my fictional interests in life. I love these movies but one of my gripes with it is that they cut important scenes including a redeeming scene for malfoy near the end of the film where he helps harry. They also cut a scene where dudley apologizes to harry in the previous movie. Great movie but they really took malfoy's redemption and cut it, now people who only see the theatrical cut will see malfoy as a coward. Looking forward to Fantastic Beasts!

Anytime I rematch these films, I always end up watching 'A Very Potter Musical' 1&2 because those were so big while I was in undergrad (probably due to my proximity to U of M but also because YouTube was this still young thing that people put stuff on). If you ever have down time, go check out Team StarKid. It is circa 2009/10 so quality isn't the best but 19/20 yr old me loved the parody! I'll sing 'Harry Freaking Potter' 'Granger Danger' and 'Voldemort is Going Down' while rewashing these films!

It's not entirely clear in the flashback but Snape was a bad guy during the events of Voldemort's first attempt to take over until he found out Lilly was a target. That's when he came to Dumbledore and changed sides playing a double agent.

I read that Alan Rickman hesitated to accept the part but was told by J.K Rowling the character arc at the end for Snape so he could portray the character knowing his love for Lilly and his role in protecting Harry. That sold him.

I do love this movie, I have a lot of feelings about how the movies did the confrontation between Harry and Voldemort and Voldemorts death, but overall it's a very good conclusion. Also ease up a little on Draco, he is a scared kid who just want to be with his mum.
I feel bad for all of the actors in the new TV show, they have to step into the shoes of some of the greatest actors of multiple generations.

The movies very much paint Snape in a more positive light than he is in the books. He is definitely the most interesting character and has done good things, but he has also done a lot of very bad things that the movies leave out.
