Moving on up

Wow. $600 a page and still going up a little every time something gets posted.

A few months ago when I opened up this Patreon to see if, just maybe, some readers would be willing to throw a few extra bucks my way, I never imagined that it would be anything more than a tiny, pleasant supplement to my monthly income.

Now, it's the majority of my income. As the support-per-page rate has climbed, I've been able to work less hours at my "real" job and spend that time drawing comics instead, and not go bankrupt! It's more than I ever expected, or planned for.

But by now, it's very clear that not only is it possible to make a living doing this, but also that I'd love nothing more than to do so. I just paid off the last of my student loans, and am now in the process of cutting my "real" job's work hours and replacing them with hours of drawing comics.

Over the next couple months, I'll be finishing up a few time-consuming things going on in real life, and begin settling into a schedule of full comic production; putting behind the idea of this being a hobby, and turning it into my main focus.

And all of this was made possible by you all. You gave me the confidence and support to turn this from a far-off dream into reality, and words alone cannot possibly convey all the Good Stuff I feel towards all of you.

So to suffice, I'm gonna pour my heart into this work that you've felt worthy to give your own money to support. There's so much story left to tell, and I'm gonna make it as entertaining and satisfying as I possibly can for you all.

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, because apparently the bottom is where all the happy feelings are located. Time to step this game up.

I am way late to the party, but I just wanted to say congrats! I am really glad you are getting such a big following, but you deserve it. Can't wait to see where the comic goes!

pon

Thank you very much for the help! Every bit is appreciated, and gives me extra motivation knowing that people out there are enjoying this stuff enough that they feel justified helping to fund it. The best stuff is yet to come, I assure you!

Val Salia

Haha, glad you decided to support me, then! I'll try and pay you back by giving you lots of fun comics. : )

Val Salia

4 days ago I read ze OOPS commic for ze first time. after reading every zing zen passing out and waking up 3 hours late for work I realized. Zat I absolutly love zis commic ze carecters, ze creaturs, ze world, ze humor, ze accents all of it. And that i needed to support the creator. XD Zanks for creating an amazing fun story and setting up a patreon page so we can help you.

Hey, it's never too late to start drawing! I never tried anything past a basic stick figure until about 6 years ago, until I decided to start training.

Val Salia

Your comic was a real wonder fo me. And so, since the time i found it, i wanted to support you. But i just put this off over and over again. When you started your patreon, i realised that the time has come. You're doing great work, keep going this way! P.S. sorry for that i'm this bad in english, i really need some practice.

I only found out about this comic only a few months ago, but I just want to say that I'm really glad you're making, and it's wonderful to hear you've had such success with it. It almost makes me want to get off my butt and start making things too... Anyway, I just wanted to add to the pile of congrats. You've hit a really good vein with these characters and their stories, and I can't wait to see what happens next!

Great, now I'm imagining a sleep-deprived and unhinged Kass delivering a frothing-at-the-mouth rant to an increasingly panicky Elim while gripping onto his lapels. This is a good image. Thank you for inspiring it.

Haha, glad to hear it! And I know the feeling of being motivated/inspired to draw and create by another artist, so it's a great feeling to know that the stuff I've been making has been able to provide that to someone else. Especially when their stuff is so entertaining! Keep it up, yo.

Val Salia

Good way of putting it! Even if it pays less than jobs I can get with my "real" skillset, there's no buying the kind of satisfaction I can get by supporting myself by doing something I love.

Val Salia

I'm already overjoyed at this opportunity myself, so it's even better to hear that others are happy for me too! It's a real motivator to hear.

Val Salia

Hook me up to some kinda life-extending support systems and I'm all for it!

Val Salia

Oh, that's a subject I've spent no small amount of thought on, believe me! That's one reason I set out to tell a story that I myself was interested in telling, and as a result, the moment I finish one page, I'm already looking forward to starting the next. I enjoyed it enough doing it for free at a loss (time/money-wise), so the chance to support myself by doing this is some sorta dream, I tell ya what

Val Salia

And to think; when designing yinglets, it was to create a species that fit a few specific needs for the story, not to create a "popular custom race" or mascot or anything, but I am now solidly "the yinglet guy." I am okay with this.

Val Salia

Great to hear! I'd love to blab about all the stuff that's yet to come, but without spoiling anything, I can say that this story and Kass' journey has only just begin.

Val Salia

You certainly have! Anyone supporting this project is more than just a collection to numbers to me; each is a person that, somewhere out there, made a conscious decision to throw a few bucks towards the stuff I'm doing, to whom I'm supremely grateful.

Val Salia

It really put a smile on my face when I saw the income you were getting on this project.. As we've already discussed, it may not have been your primary motivation for starting OOPs, but I'm only to imagine how good it feels to be earning some compensation for the work--- Compensation that is clearly an indication of the appreciation that is out there for it. It its a good feeling to see the success, additionally, because it's not like I've not got something back out-- dare I admit a bit of guilt, here. But, as I think you're pretty aware by now, it has been fanning my artistic fires and my imagination. I have made new friends, done new things! (stream art) and lost a lot of sle-- --er-I-mean.. I spent a lot of time drawing and pondering story ideas. As I've read the comics, the depth of the world you've created and moreover the breadth of possibilities you've created with the story is rather stunning to me. I really can't wait to see what happens next! Its clear there is a lot going on that we have yet to find out about! Hearing this is, just... awesome! :) ...

Sesra

darn right you were! :B

Out of Placers and their adventures! 100 years Out of Placers!

Arkwryte

You did really help push me into it, back when I just thought "I dunno, it sounds like a lot of setup and extra work for an extra... what, $25 a month? I doubt THAT many people would pay for it." Clearly I was mistaken

Val Salia

Well you know what they say. A job is something you do to make money, a career is doing something you love while getting paid to do it. Do what you love and you will, one way or another, find you patch of success eventually, and here you are.

I greatly enjoy your work. Happy to provide support and see your ideas come to life. Overjoyed for you. Your comics are a treat.

Vikis The Snarky

Congrats on how succesful your patreon has become! That you have paid off your loans and are able to cut some time from your job, to pledge more time to comic making. I hope though that you still will take care of yourself and your love for drawing, keep your heart in the right place so to say. That you still will make things "you" like and want to, and not let it become a "chore" and duty. Best wishes for the future! Good job!

It's a good thing you too a chance on all this :B Congrats on all your success with it!

Wat

I dunno what it is about the yinglets, but I love those guys. I saw a picture of a yinglet on some random website, and I thought, there's gotta be a backgstory, and I want to know what it is. Some googling later, and bam! New fan.

Glad I could help out with your project! You can count on my continued support as you go about telling the tale of a certain unfortunate rat...bird...thing.

Glad ya think so! Because this whole comics-for-income thing that's now possible for me is only possible by people who do.

Val Salia

Yay! I'm glad we could help! Keep up the great work and most importantly, have fun! ^.^

Truttle Bear

To Val Salia, of course!

Val Salia

Aw man that's great to hear; I know the feeling of getting another artist's story stuck in my head, so I love knowing that this story is providing that to someone else.

Val Salia

Hey, no problem! I totally understand that this Patreon is nowhere as important as food, shelter and education and such, so don't be spending any money here that you need elsewhere! Everyone's got their ups and downs financially, so don't feel bad about pulling your support whenever you need to!

Val Salia

I feel like I get more than my money's worth already! Can't wait to see what else you can do. Thanks for all the effort you put into this comic, I really enjoy it and I reckon I think about it pretty deeply probably every day haha

Kate P

Unfortunately just as real life gives you a break it hits me in the face. I've had to drop a lot of my Patreon supports. Sadly yours is soon to come. ;_; I've loved seeing your growth over this last half year and I plan to be back supporting all my favourite artists when I'm done with school. I'll throw a couple bucks in your tip jar when I can to feel like I'm still supporting you. :D

Cam Pianzola

Thanks a lot! The quality, and consistency of the character designs and release schedule are at the top of my list to make further improvements on, now that I'm starting to have a lot more time to devote to drawing.

Val Salia

I'm excited to see where this wild ride takes us!

Maradrax

Love the art, love the thought you put into your world-building. Well worth paying for.

Your consistency over the years, combined with the slow and steady increase in quality, makes every dollar spent totally worth it!
