Dad Reacts to Kendrick Lamar - Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers

Dad Reacts to Kendrick Lamar - Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers

Comments

Run the Jewels

Sergio Mendez

Your Dad is Freaking Amazing I love the way he album to conceptualize each song and be able to relate to each track and he’s really big on sound and production he’s listens to the album with Lyrics in front of him im definitely glad you are able do this with him 🙏

Warren Brown

Trying to work out what song he’s sampled for the drums in United in grief?

Ryan Daniels

El-Ps production is undefeated

Colton Clause

yeah this was a play. piano, actors. stage. and i have a feeling mirror is his send off. last album with tde as announced. he has made us think, but he is not our savior. he is done being mr morale. he has chosen him. and he might be done with music, kind of like andre 3000, forever or at least for a while. to pursuit humanitarian work, PgLang and more art, to heal and to live life with more privacy. and it is a play on that. and it may be his last :((((( that is what the second full listen just made me feel.

Villuhz

I’m with your dad, this album is more of a theatrical play. More of Act 1 and Act 2. And how every other song jumps from scene to scene, it’s almost made for him to direct this album live.

Will Lane

Can you guys do Atrocity Exhibition soon

Alexnader Moises Almonte

This album definitely need more than one listen 🎶 to understand fully.

Sadch

faces is long over due

Sascha Keller

This album is legit a Masterpiece, no doubt. Btw, great reaction, the uncut version is really worth joining the patreon

Jbrennend

This album reminds me of Toy Story 4 where Woody chooses to leave his friends to live a life of his own… Kendrick saying he can’t be the rap savior then ending the final verse of the album with “sorry I couldn’t save the world my friend, I was too busy building mine again… I choose me I’m sorry” felt like a bittersweet message to the listener and TDE that he’s no longer living for us. Love this album.. On a separate note, I think your dad is finally ready for Faces

Michael Guerra

Album was better after each play through. 🔥 Y’all gotta do J Cole - KOD album, that’s in my top 5

Shawn Cox

What an awesome reaction. Auntie Diaries is my favorite, make sure to have Connor explain the endowing line of that song because y’all kind of missed it 😂 love you guys thanks Kevin for being a dad to me today.

Alexander Colter

You are always hip

Carl Jackson

Can't wait to see these performed live. Will be another level.

Jon Scanlon

Hope you guys saw that he is indeed coming to Vancouver!

Mikaela

kennys in vancouver in august!

MGMSB

ever since this album dropped, every other bit of music bores me (for now). i can't get enough of this album. fuck.

SIEN

I love you guys and this community, I was waiting for the day the power of a song could bring out some real emotion. Really enjoyed this one, thanks!

I only appreciate real content

auntie diaries is song of the year

Big Dog

A work of art

Hassan Hokash

On my 5/6th listen to the album and Im picking up more and more

Rasha Rahman

19:00 Dad needs a BBL

Rasha Rahman

While watching I realized you should do Florence and the machine at some point. She was the sample at the very start of we cry together.

AJ

I always love listening to albums with you guys, y’all make it a lot easier and more enjoyable to listen sometimes

Ziggy L

I know you guys have a schedule on YouTube but really surprised you didn’t drop this on YouTube when it came out. Easy 300k+ views

SlyMorris

ur dads drip evolution has been neat, nice to see yas experience something together for the first time, has to be a more regular thing!

papaollie

Glad I watched it with you guys. More for the musical display that Kendrick showed that I think are leagues above his past albums. I think I’ve finally digested the whole album for most of its reasonings. Definitely intrigued to see what Kendrick will do for his concerts because I have a feeling it will be in a play like atmosphere.

Parris Styles

also every time Kevin teared up, I was tearing up as well.

Raj Nair

just wanna say that watching you both react to listening to the album for the first time was dope.

Raj Nair

elaborate?? i’m intrigued

Jackツ

This was so worth the Patreon pledge! What you guys are doing is special.

Joonas Puuppo

I think I'm 3 listens and 5 cries deep. Father time and I cry bout my relationship with my father, then auntie diaries I cry about my queer cousins and aunt and our religious upbringing, then Mother I Sober brings it home and i cry over childhood sexual abuse. Kenny on another level.

Claudio Simpkins

I am soooo soooo glad you guys loved it as much as I did. Kendrick has been getting some flack for his language in Auntie Diaries, but I think Kevin's reaction really shows why those stories told with that pain and grit is important. I think its really cool to go back and listen to this album as his process through therapy. He also is very vulnerable about having cheated on his wife Whitney, and its hear breaking to hear how his trauma with daddy issues, and dealing with the abusive his mother receieve caused him to have an adicition to sex. It is very similar to SA survivors who end up becoming either Hypo or Hyper sexual. The vulnerability is just incredible, and reading into the lyrics and taking them apart is really worth the time. Can't wait for interviews about this album.

Gage Ignota

I really liked you guys both reacting to the album together, it was great to hear your discussion about how the songs affected both of you at the same time. I'd love to see more reactions like this in the future and thank you for doing this guys <3

patreonuser2034

Watch on a browser instead of the app

Joey Jopek

Vimeo isn’t working for me anyone know how to help?

Taylor Hall

was that the return of Kevin's shivery wivers on Father Time?? historic

Shems Riza

I love how you guys have gotten so far that now it's not only Kevin reacting but Connor too! It's really overwhelming to see, thanks for the content! Much love.

Yandro

Both sides of a smile by Dave has a similar concept as we cry together. Great song, I would definetly recommend giving it a listen

Stian f

This has become my new favorite reaction from you two! There is a different dynamic when both of you are experiencing it for the first time. Your thoughts at the end of each track were very well done! It was also cool to see the vulnerability of Kendrick also pull some moments of vulnerability from Kevin. Very powerful stuff!!! Thank you for taking your time through this! If you so happen to read this comment I would just like to make a quick request. It would make me very happy to see a reaction to Coloring Book by Chance the Rapper. One of my all time favorite albums and I haven’t seen Kevin hear anything of chance besides ultra light beam. Thanks again!

Andrew Meddles

beautiful story Kevin, I appreciate you telling us.

riley harrington

Nice sweater!

Shane Anderson

I love this Album. It's also my first Kendrick Album that I get to listen to right after the release and it was a different feeling!

Chris

Hearing Kevin’s story really brought a tear to my eye as the the song did the first time I heard it, incredible video

Aziz Syed

This was so fun. You guys probably grasped more on first listen than I did,

Dirt McGirt

that song got me in tears tbh

Sascha Keller

I loved y’all experiencing this together. Y’all gotta keep doing this with new music. Your Dad is so cool and accepting of new music and that’s why I follow you guys

Beezy

a lot of the subject matter in this album was a huge miss for me but still it’s nice to see him at least try.

Unsweetened

This was my first exposure to Kendrick Lamar. 46, Mexican gal, a metric fuck-ton of generational trauma, going through a divorce, dealing with my own personal gender/identity discovery. When I say I CRIED -

Andi Watson

yo when he said worth the wait that killed me, mans has no idea

Walter Houghton

auntie diaries is just life for so many and it’s neat to hear that in kendricks own story. as a child born in australia to two mums in 2003, when IVF wasn’t legal for lesbians, when my non-biological mum couldn’t put her name on my birth certificate, where gay marriage wasn’t made legal until I was 15, that’s the life that was lived. not religious but having mothers who didn’t want me to fear the lives of others (coz they know how that goes), having a catholic boys school upbringing full of students and friends who couldn’t say the f word as a joke without venom and realising my own sexuality and gender amidst that, it was all kind of terrifying. i’d seen them all grow with me and that’s why i came out to them before i could my own family. I couldn’t come out to my own mums for two years because of the world I lived in, an irrational fear considering the life they’d given me. the experiences shared by queer folk, even seen just in these comments here, are reflected in all cultures, all families. to see human in the want to be loved and love freely, as well as the fear that is founded in belligerent ignorance, is to be human. whether it’s black, white, het, queer or anything in between, to say you are human to those that will listen is not to be a saviour but a leader, which is what kendricks done and that’s pretty neat. anyways sorry for the essay, good shit boys keep it up 🤙

Xanthe

haha, I know exactly what you're talking about with the colonoscopy I watched all 3 lord of the rings movies while on the toilet. That prep drink is no joke

Cameron Ackerman

I just heard !! If you see a old grey haired guy drinking beers.. please say hi - Kevin

TTT

This is a great album, some of the tracks remind me a lot of damn, like Purple Hearts. Kendrick has one of the best catalogues of all time

Julius H

I think the reason some people are disappointed in this album is because they fetishizes and fantasize about Kendrick releasing another album full of loud bangers, when the art in this one is mainly in the vulnerable lyrics and passages about transforming his life. I see it as watching your friend breakdown over a hardship in life and you having 2 big options. 1: Tell him to get up, take life by the bootstraps and be strong again. Or 2: Take a moment to listen and allow them to be human🤷🏾‍♂️ Major theme in the album too and it’s funny how people “listen to the whole thing” and miss the point. That’s just my opinion though. Great video guys.

Daniel Hernandez

I wonder if keem was the one who inspired all the drastic beat switches throughout the album cause he loves those

Cameron Ackerman

Kendricks use of the F word on here is appropriate. What a song

Dion Byrne

I’m so glad you guys enjoyed Auntie Diaries. As a gay man, it means so much to see a rapper talk about treating gay and trans people like human beings.

Noah Robinson

Quick Baby Keem facts he produced Rich Spirit, and Savior & N95. Keem also has been producing/ writing on projects for Beyonce(The Lion King Album) when he was 17/18 and also the Black Panther soundtrack he's special man.

Joshua Raggs

I cried so many times throughout this album. So beautifully vulnerable and so sonically amazing. This is fuckin art! Kendrick is a true Artist and this is a masterpiece.

John(zilla-StillOnTrack)

hands down the best write up ive read so far; really beautiful. And cool to note about the album cover, his back is literally turned to the audience and he looks out to the presumable window towards the light, not at the viewer, looking out for his family and the future; his wife doing the same with their child. Really so personal

Brando

Kendrick announced the concert man. Catch me at Rogers arena ✌🏼

Luis Poveda

I was dying laughing after you hear "Rich Spirit" and your dad was saying that might be where he is at now. In a good mood and making catchy hooks. And the very next track is "We cry together" hahahahaha

Sean Gilbert

Gets better with every listen.

Nate

thank you for your story kevin, you made me cry ❤️❤️❤️

Nate Robertson

Trust me,this album is ahead of his time. People will appreciate it so much more years from now. I liked it on the first listen, but now after the 5th lsiten I think this is something else. It feels like a theater play, not even music.

Daniel Szepfalusi

We Cry Together is basically Kim from Eminem but it’s ends with sex instead of murder. Even down to the Alchemist beat it’s 100% Eminem influenced.

Tommy McMaster

His tour for this is going everywhere! Can't wait to see him

Sam Sturm

People saying that 1 full day isn't enough to have an opinion are such hypocrites, you can say it is a classic but if you don't like it your opinion is invalid, so stupid

Alhe1419

The shivery wivvers are back!!!!

Jorge Campos Jr.

let's go, i waited to hear this one with you all

weston

Listened to this album and made me really self reflect. Just like yourself Auntie Diaries & Mother I Sober brought tears to my eyes. Everything confronted in this album I have endured in some similar fashion. A breath of fresh air this album is. Great job with the reaction and giving your truth. Feel like we got some free therapy. One love!

Frankie Williams

MF DOOM as Viktor Vaughn has a song with a similar concept to We Cry Together called Can I watch? thats about an argument between him and his gf

Dylan

But it’s still enough for y’all to say it’s a classic? I’ve listened to it 4 times because I’m a Kendrick fan.

MusicEnjoyer8

Produced by The Alchemist!!

Ryan Moore

congrats! you're retarded.

Black Randy

literally crying after hearing Auntie Diaries. Kendrick why would you drop something so powerful and emotional?

PigquackDoesGaming

when kevin called it HIS album i got a rush of serotonin

DNDNDNDN

First time here on patreon I love all the reactions. y'all are the best Father,Son music reaction duo. this album had me in tears aswell Kendrick never disappoints 10/10

Synclo

Your father would love Run the Jewels!

Bob

"It's been worth the wait for me." "What wait did you have? Two weeks?"

Brian Nani

There is no way you have digested this album enough in less than 24 hours to give it a proper rating. What happened to sitting with music?

Jack Classic

I see that mobb deep in the back hope you guys do a reaction someday

Brendan B

I love you guys can’t wait to watch this!!!!

Michael Holmes

Ill try not to be long winded but with two listens, I feel the title is him being ironic. We see Kendrick as a savior but he has these flaws that Whitney sees. Its almost as if shes being sarcastic calling him Mr Morale. He's supposed to be this guy with morals but morally he fucked up between them and then his morals with his loved ones. The steppers is him going all these years not confronting all of the trauma. "stop tip toeing around the conversation". Great album. Definitely shared tears to this. Id like to see other takes on it. my view will change as i grow with this album. Loved the reaction. keep it up

Fernando Martinez

It’s my thirds listen and this is is such an amazing album, it’s def an album that grows on you and I can already see some people divided. He really is taking the throne with this album.

Jay The Cyborg

Auntie diaries is truly one of the most powerful songs Kendrick has possibly ever made. Your story brought me to tears too Kevin. Thank you for opening up, it really is so important to us as humans to do this.

Gavin N Willard

Too early to tell bro. Try to ingest it from your most unbiased pov and give it time before we throw around ratings

Aaron Reyes

6/10, Kenny’s second word project behind section 80

MusicEnjoyer8

We Cry Together is such a work of art. Taylour Paige killed it and she’s not even a rapper. She’s an actress.

Julian Nguyen

Album is amazing. Looking forward to you guys reacting 😊

AZ_Resist

The instrumental to father time reminded me so much of mf doom, and then he had that line about his tounge being made out of sword that he annunciated so much like him.

Elijah

Yay

Rainbow Skiitz

Incredible writing, some if not his best work, may not have the most replay value like good kidd or damn, this is more like Tbap being pure poetry. This album is very personal to him and he has never expressed it in this way or sound ever. Each listen I love this record more and more. He is the king.

Nick Valentine

love the jumper kevin!

Faran

mid album

chillsynth

I hope you guys do Section.80 some time, one of my favorites from Kendrick

Collin Barrett

i love this album

Matthew Turner

it’s just my initial opinion. it’s really good. i’m not opposed to changing that opinion. we all know it’s been out 24 hours. all of us have an opinion so far. if you don’t then why are you here? this is a react channel dummy

bL

24 hours is more than enough to have an opinion on it lmao

Alhe1419

I'll echo Sam and say I felt the same way this morning when I did my first listen. I think my expectations of what this album should be were really unfair to put on it. But once I gave it a second, third and fourth listen, it started opening up and really exposing how beautiful, deeply personal and intelligent it is. I think this is his most mature album to date which also kind of makes it the hardest to get into. Hope you're able to experience that journey too cause I know being disappointed with one of your favorite artists really stings.

Tyler Shobe

very cool seeing you guys both listen to it for the first time. Would love this format for other highly anticipated releases in the future too!

Sam Lando

Baby Keem produced savior interlude/savior, N95 and Die Hard !

John Alajijian

As the bucks game is starting!? Come onnnnnn man! Just kidding, can’t wait to watch this after I watch the game, I could go on forever but, what an (for lack of a better word right now) incredible album!!! King Kendrick is back 👑👑

Tyler Alten

you are disappointing

Madvillain

I was underwhelmed after the first listen because I wasn't sure what to expect, its really growing on me though with each listen since then

Sam Medeiros

Album is pretty disappointing

Fred

Auntie Diaries goes crazy

Courtland Hughes

This whole album is literally Kendrick sitting in for a therapy session I think the theme of the album is that the big steppers are people who step up to actually confront our issues in society and that the tapdancing all over the album is to represent how people and culture tapdance around hot button topics but never seem to really want to actually fix any of it, only using them at this point to virtue signal or grandstand/get likes etc. And I think a lot of it has to do with sex crime and sex equality as well and how we treat each other over it when it comes to image, be it homosexuality or being seen as weak because of molestation or what have you, so people mask it and hide it deep down and project their feelings onto others in toxic ways and the cycle continues instead of actually addressing it and attempting to openly speak about it in a way that is helpful. especially now with how you may get your character assassinated or discredited for voicing your opinion or stating your own personal views or how you really feel about it, even if it is wrong or misguided. so taken literally, Mr Morale is freeing his mind and leading by example in being what everyone wants him to be, but doing it his own way because he has the confidence that it will actually help change things, because he has respect and loyalty of the industry and his fans and faith that it will help shape the future. Morale is high because he had the confidence to go against the norm and say what he has to say, how he wants to say it, and he is finally freeing his own conscience as well as being conscious enough to be aware of his surroundings that he is able to speak on things he has buried deep down and by finally doing so has broken a "generational curse". There are nuances and deliberate things that happened during the course of the album that help me draw this conclusion, like from the very start the sample is "I hope you find some peace of mind in this lifetime" then a woman says "tell them the truth" the tap dancing length seems to shorten every time it comes in, and the subject matter gets more and more open over the course of the album. then the intentional deep faking during heart 5 made me think of what those people actually represented in context to the album
Kanye has spoken about his mental health and being bipolar and more recently, has been all over the news due to his divorce with kim. He has also admitted that sex addiction was one of the leading causes of him finding God.
Jussie Smollett is a gay actor who felt underpaid and staged his own crime and was convicted over it, where, in fact, he had 2 black men help him stage it.
OJ got away with murdering his ex wife, more than likely over an affair, and then ironically went to prison over retrieving his own belongings
Will Smith slapped Chris Rock on stage out of sheer frustration and pain from dealing with the scandal with his wife, also sex related.
Nipsey was gunned down in his own neighborhood that he himself built up and was a victim of crimes he participated in as well as spoke out against later in his life. The gunman is now known to have been upset over being called a snitch, driven there by a woman who had picked him up and stopping in the shopping center for food. The woman is said to have mentioned Nipsey as "fine" and wanting to take a picture with him. the first time they approach, she does indeed get a photo with him and posts it to social media.
Kobe also dealt with his own sexual assault case. He also spoke out and was a huge advocate for women's sports due to his daughters.
which, if i am somewhat right, seem to be all examples of "big steppers", people who were vicitms as well as offenders, yet both stood up and openly dealt with their issues in the public. Kendrick saying he chooses himself seems to be that he is choosing his personal health and wellbeing over being an icon, and instead of trying to be what everyone wants him to be he would rather admit his flaws and shortcomings and try to free himself and his family of what he calls a generational curse. The cover art now also makes a lot more sense to me as a lot of this album is Kendrick saying to the fans I can’t be your saviour, I’m just a regular guy and the cover art is him In just a regular ass house being with his family, protecting them all with the crown on top of his head that we as fans put there as we call him hip-hops messiah/messenger and put him on a pedestal and the juxtaposition of those two things.
He is not your savior. He does not need to provide anything to you. He is a human being trying to make the best of his situation. You have put your values and opinions into someone's perspective that is fractured from a life of abuse and trauma. He owes you nothing. He chose himself this time. Maybe for the first time.

Tribecalledjoe

the only thing i could think about while listening to the album was “was will conner and kevin think about this and that” lol so excited for this reaction!!

Aaron

A good explanation of the album I saw: On United grief (1st song) he started off the song by saying he has been going through something for 1855 days. That is how many days ago he dropped DAMN. At the beginning of the song Whitney (his fiancé) tells him to "Tell Them what's been going on". Them being the therapist and now us. You can clearly tell he is reluctant to open up and talk to the therapist. This is his first session. Then the whole album he continues to take us through his sessions and his growth. Growth is not always an upward projection. A lot of the time it's anger, denial, it's ranting. It is realizing things you have not realized before. And sometimes it's saying fuck what everyone else feels. And that is exactly what the first side of the album is. Then the second side of the album starts with" Session 10. We reached a breakthrough. And the second album is that breakthrough. It is him admitting his guilt, his anger, his hurt, his wrongs, his trauma, his family trauma and accepting it and healing from it. And loving himself. Again this is not an upward trajectory either. But the album ends with him choosing himself. This whole album takes us through his self-love journey through trauma and pain. And he shows this process is not easy, pretty, or conventional. It is personal and it is the hardest journey anyone would have to take in their life. But it is so rewarding.
