Comments

After hearing your discussion at the end of this week's reading, I've been meaning to comment on it for days, but there are just so many directions and deep dives my mind takes with the topic, and it seemed like too much to get into here. I aimed to be brief in touching on just a few things below, but as you'll see, I failed πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ I used to pray with a very similar manner of address, feeling uncertain of whom/what I was praying to. Over the last year or so, I've become more habitual again with praying/expressing my gratitude, and I just say "Lord" because whatever, I don't know the nature of the being(s)/force(s), but I feel that part's not really important; if I'm heard, the uncertainty is understood. Regarding your views on what is good or just to do against people who act maliciously and do others harm, I'm actually not surprised, because my view on the matter sort of progressed in the same way, though like you, I also don't consider it settled. After years of believing in suggested hidden workings of goodness and justice and of trying often to give grace to others and accept their hurt from them, I have become a bit world-weary. Suffering has come to seem like a sort of spiritual currency, which can be endured to order/create or to "pay off" disorder. While those seeking to be good--following Jesus or the like--may choose to suffer at times for the sake of others, it feels deeply unjust when people/beings are involuntarily shackled with suffering for others' selfish desires, ignorance, sinfulness, etc. Enslaving people to augment one's (person/family/country) wealth & comfort is an example of this. Dumping toxic chemicals to maintain higher profits is another. There are people who exercise their wills to make such things possible; is it wrong to exercise one's will to oppose them and help their victims? To force individuals themselves to endure or recompense the suffering required for their prosperity or deriving from their chaotic acts? There are degrees of "evil" in people, but as you know, there are some who are prolific and incorrigible in their wickedness. Should they just be permitted to wreak havoc to save violence against them? Is it preferable to allow others to be forced to bear their burden? And where's the line? And then this all leads me to other questions about humanity's purpose. Sorry for not making this more about the book; what you said just sparked a lot of thoughts in me, and I wanted to share them with you. I've joined in the middle of these readings and haven't read The Way of Kings myself. But it's nice hearing you read it, so thank you!
