According to the company, the science division is studying the climate effects of the operation. The platform is primarily an ice mining operation. As the city continues to expand so does the population, which means more water is needed. The city is also terraforming the planet's atmosphere, making it breathable.
The city is a colony and most of its operations are automated, very few who live there know how much of the technology that keeps them alive works. So it makes sense for them to study the ancient technology and its effects.
Oddly enough, the platform chief of security has no authority over the science division, which has its own CorpSec security. The science division's facilities are off limits to the rest of the platform's crew.
