Rated M Conversion
Added 2018-03-09 05:42:30 +0000 UTC
Hey folks!
For those who played games that fall under Rated M (17+) with sexual content, I need a little help with knowing what kind of content can be retained.
So obviously the graphically explicit stuff needs to be cut out, but what my concern now is the text/dialogue and context. Here are some techniques that I'm considering...
TEXT:
Original Sample: 1. "Her [uncensored word] was wet."
Censored A: 2. "Her p***y was wet."
Censored B: 3. "Her **** was wet."
Edited for censorship: 4. "She became wet."
CONTEXT:
Now as for the context of the text, if it involves something leading up to sexy time, maybe foreplay and fondling at most, what's acceptable to include or exclude here (based on what you've seen in other games that have an M (17+) rating?

Ah yes, hehe! Well, I'm testing it out now. I'll probably announce the M version soon so if you want to see how we changed things up... ;) We kept the changes minimal, only editing things as necessary.
2018-03-13 02:30:42 +0000 UTCWill keep that in mind ;) The M version will not be canon. Think of it as a feature switch - it's already within the game.
2018-03-13 02:27:44 +0000 UTCThat's true. It's a trade off for sure. For now, an M version will probably serve as an introduction to the game, so it's not canon. From what I've gone through, the editing work wasn't too bad or too difficult since I did implement this feature ahead of time.
2018-03-13 02:25:56 +0000 UTCHi BB, while I can understand that you want to reach a wider audience by/or having this game posted not only on xxx pages I think we'll loose one of the key attributes that makes the game so appealing by censoring the dialogues and pixeling/deleting the naughty scenes. Is that really worth it/what you want to happen to your art?

2018-03-12 19:23:25 +0000 UTCThanks for the feedback! Well, based on what I've converted so far, there's almost no loss, or complete rewrites. It's a combination of euphemism substitutions, maybe a line omission, or maybe a group of text that needs an alternate version. I need to look into how this "patch" thing works
2018-03-11 00:28:58 +0000 UTCHaving played this game I can honestly say censoring it in any way would hinder the progress already made and be detrimental to the storyline. Refining it is one thing but changing the current game to fit an M rating would cause you to lose your audience, imho
2018-03-10 19:13:40 +0000 UTCIn a vaguely related note: On the subject of censoring games i am very much a fan of the method of a censored version plus an unofficial patch to add 18+ content back in, as a lot of recentish visual novels on steam have done. Seems a good compromise :)

2018-03-10 12:31:39 +0000 UTCI'm guessing this rating system is a bit different from MPAA, and 17+ is a lower rating than AO (adults only?). And is also where Sango being in lingerie by the garden door (still in 0.6.0) comes into play, even though the dialogue still refers to her as naked. As for the different routes, yes, Tomone's will likely be difficult to get around as will Shouko's. Even Kikue's route could be problematic depending on the level of censorship. Another thought, how will the censors react to the mention of how Sango got her scars? (Touchy subject these days.) I can't even imagine changing the "Sexy Scenes" to fit ANY kind of censorship, and if they're simply removed the attraction of RnO, for many, is lost. I understand wanting to open it up to a wider audience, but I think it will lose a lot of its appeal. For the M audience, what level of foreplay is "allowed"? Fondling, over clothing "may" be acceptable, but that's in the eyes of the censors, yes? I can't comment on any other M games. I've never seen one, and frankly, probably wouldn't play it. I wish you luck!

2018-03-10 02:38:02 +0000 UTCNoted!
2018-03-09 23:13:19 +0000 UTCThat'd definitely be playing with fire, ratings-wise, but if you only mention the rope-play, and leave out or only vaguely imply the sexual aspect of it, you might be able to pull it off.

2018-03-09 09:02:07 +0000 UTCHere's an example of what confuses me: The term BDSM - is this "safe" to mention? I mean there's fifty shades of gray and all
2018-03-09 06:46:05 +0000 UTCHmmm. How about pervy thoughts?
2018-03-09 06:05:06 +0000 UTCHmmm... that's a bit of an issue for this type of game. In the given example, you might be able to get away with saying something like "she was aroused", but even that is a maybe. I'd say that you should be able to get away with anything that doesn't describe the actual process of things, but I'm not sure where the advisory boards would draw a line.
2018-03-09 06:03:12 +0000 UTClol! I looked at the guidelines, and what I saw was... pretty gray stuff. The graphically explicit part was obvious, but the detail on the non-visual aspect confused me. Right now, I'm working through the dialog one line at a time, starting with the hardest route - Tomone lol
2018-03-09 06:01:06 +0000 UTCAh. That was Rated M and not AO? I'm looking at putting another version of the game with an M rating, for a little more reach where it's available now, and maybe the Play store - but given how the game's like, we might have to scratch off the Play store from the list.
2018-03-09 05:57:55 +0000 UTCUm, I have played some VERY explicit text based games and they did not have a censor....unless you are meaning for public site ratings. Sadly i can not reference one but i am pretty sure it was mature rated and adult text.
