Even an entire room of roses and petals would have been too much pressure and formality for me personally. Quite a few less and somewhat of a heads up would be more my comfort level. Just saying!

Being put on the spot, especially in public, does not work for me either. I would fully expect that I'd be aware and have had time to script and rehearse my response 😂, otherwise make it as informal as possible. Overall sincerity would be all that's necessary.
