It had been a long time since I went to LA to shoot anything for myself. I made the drive down earlier this year, and shot videos and even a few photos at my friends place, but I didn't make it out of the city...didn't plan anything beyond the back yard of the house I was staying in.
So there was a huge part of me wondering if this was still something I could do. Show up to a location, figure out the light, figure out the composition, figure out most importantly how to do it all safely. I drove out, and was immediately worried about the amount of people, the quality of the light, etc. Things did not look great upon arrival.
The weather was nice, not a cloud in the sky, and the temperature was warm...these are not great things when trying to take pictures. Arson and I hiked far up the beach, bounced around a little alcove, and found this little spot with nobody around, and sort of a canyon to hide from the sun. Then we got to work.
My nervous energy was quickly replaced with relief. I can still do this. I can find the light outside of my own backyard, and then find the composition. Maybe even better than before.
Growing as an artist is weird, it feels invisible to me. Unless I really look back
