Witchcraft and Devilry Chapter 39

Chapter 39 of Witchcraft and Devilry, in which Harry and Rias attend the Agares ball, dealing with Minobella's probing and schemes, while Fleur and the others meet with Deirdre McAllen, the one employee of the Lynch family that they know of, hoping to secure a meeting, and in France, Sebastian's condition takes a terrible turn.

Liam is in for a nasty surprise if he tries to fight Harry and co… I maintain that “Liam” is just the Lynch Patriarch who’s been body-hopping for a very long time. I bet the group will find out that the process to make House elves is also something super twisted and fucked up I bet. So Minobella despite all her meddling hasn’t discovered the truth about Harry, that’s good. Will Seekvaira and Sona join Harry’s harem? Seek definitely seems like she’d love to take a ride on Harry. Can’t wait for the next chapter. I guess that’ll be when Fleur reveals her devil nature to her mother. That’s bound to be interesting

I suppose the way Liam acted (when debriefing Deirdre) is confirming my theory that he really is the OG Lynch patriarch who's been "body-hopping", I think that's how someone else termed it, for generation after generation. I wonder if he does it by way of a Horcrux, or if he's found some other way - the timing/pattern of supposedly changing patriarchs is rather peculiar - or even if it's some sort of combined method. Relatedly, I also wonder if the inclusion of the insane Irish necromancer in the previous chapter as a suspect is related, or if she was really just there for the sake of storytelling. Clearly, as I think we can see with Deirdre, he has some way of controlling people and have them be loyal enough to be aware of him really just be the repeated "reincarnation" of himself, albeit in changing bodies. Quite horrifying, all of it. It also begs the question of what's really up with the house elves and how they're created; I can't help but think there's something equally sick and twisted at play. Clearly, he's no stranger to have "people to kill", and it would make a twisted sort of sense if the house elves are some sort of magical construct given life by way of the (stolen) soul of some unfortunate sod. I don't know if that theory makes sense though, as the soul would have to be that of a magical, I'd think - isn't that how magic is tied in? - and snatching/killing so many magicals would surely have been noticed. I certainly hope it isn't quite as extreme, and more like a sort of evil breeding programme. Anyway, great chapter as always. I really like this story, and I love that it has these semi self-contained story arcs (the second of which we're now in; Harry's "rise" being the first) and that it seems to be continuing with at least another arc (freeing his mother, and then there's all the whole incubus thing) - but the whole curse thing here sort of came out of nowhere, so who knows how many twists and turns this will take.

You mean that Fleur should not have been there at the bar for the meeting, and they've been found out because of it? Yeah, I agree; that was a tactical mistake on their part. Still, I imagine Lynch would've been suspicious either way - he was already, in fact - and I'm sure he would've been digging further into what they were up to. But he probably wouldn't have figured it out yet to the extent that he felt like taking "drastic measures" was warranted, and now it seems Harry & Co. will be walking into a trap. I think they'll be expecting that to a degree, though. Honestly, if I were them, I'd ask Sirzechs to be on standby to come in like a proverbial battering ram if things go south during the meeting. Lynch undoubtedly has all sorts of tricks up his sleeve, but I reckon there's not much he could do against a devil of that level of power.

Once again another peak chapter. Akeno, Luna, Hermione, and Fleur keeping the investigation going and are slowly closing in on the culprit while Harry and Rias attend the Ball where Minobella decided to be nosy and was lead to the wrong conclusion about Harry's status though Seekvaira coming in clutch and not saying anything to her mom was awesome. His identity as an Incubus gets to be safe for awhile longer and man I wonder how upset Venelana will be once Rias informs her that her sister casted a lust charm on her just to snoop. I digress, once more I await what shall happen next as this arc has been truly incredible to read.
