I first met Romi in New Zealand when I was a guest instructor on a workshop in New Zealand. I was immediately blown away by her enthusiasm for creating an image. Her excitement for not just her own images but the other models in attendance was simply infectious. Her presence elevated us all in the face of extreme adversity.

New Zealand kicked our asses. The weather, bugs, temperature, and work we had to put into every image was crazier than I had experienced before, so when Romi moved to Spain I knew that although it wasn't high on my list of places I wanted to visit for photography I was going.

Spain came together after we realized during our 2017 Arctic Nude workshop that we needed to get to Europe ahead of the event to avoid punishing jet lag. We plotted a course that would have us bouncing around Europe for a few weeks exploring brand new countries, and then ending in Iceland for a week of teaching. We left much of it open in each country so that we could decide on the ground where to go. Its my preferred way to travel to adapt to what we are presented with and pursue what is the most exciting.

What I expected in Spain was harsh light, hot weather, and sandy beaches...if you have ever shot along side me you know that this is sort of my worst case scenario. I love clouds, cold weather, mountains, and rocky beaches. Then Spain surprised us.

We drove north twice one day with Romi, baby, Eva Lunia, and Nicole, and on the second day the little one stayed behind. We drove nearly to France to where the Pyrenees meet the Mediterranean on one of the many beautiful cloudy and cool days Spain gave us. Hiking through the rosemary and lavender fields to the ocean stopping along the way to create in hidden geological formations. Its amazing to me how many places we can go and still be surprised by nature just when it feels like we have seen it before we pass by something new. The ocean and the land is always painting something we have not seen, until we stand above it.
