The last light of the day is often the best light. Not so true in Seattle during the winter, but Los Angeles it seems to always be the case. I suppose first light is great too, but I'm not a morning person, unless I have stayed up working on photos until morning.
I spent almost all of 2016 shooting outdoor nudes exclusively, or Temperance while I was home in Philly, but the last couple months of 2017 I have been taking a little bit of a break from road tripping. Not because I wanted to, but because of a knee injury I got while in Patagonia shooting with Nicole. 9 years of driving like a long distance trucker and sleeping in the car finally caught up with me. It turns out you can get repetitive motion injuries from driving, and when that happens driving for more than just 15 minutes becomes agony.
But out of that has come sort of a small shift in my work. I've been experimenting a lot more with portraits again, or sets. Its been nice. I think for me its important to take a break, so that I can come back to the outdoors fresh with a new perspective.
Its weird to me now that this type of work is what I originally was known for. The big turning point for me was traveling for 50 models 50 states. I realized there was so much to landscape photography I wanted to explore, but with models because else wise it felt lacking to me.
Its been fun to explore this, but I'm also looking forward to transitioning all my portrait work to wet plates, as I get better at the process.
