A Portrait Session with Jenn D

I followed Jenn on tumblr for a long time before I got the chance to shoot with her.  I tried quite a few times to make the trip out to Kentucky to make the shoot happen, but inevitably something would get in the way.  The last legs of my trip I'm normally exhausted and so sometimes they get cut short by my own anxiety, and sometimes life comes up.  It happens.  Life on the road is like a a pot of water at a roaring boil all the time.  You are driving hours from shoot to shoot, city to city creating at a manic pace, and then it boils over, puts out the fire and all the energy you had is gone.

When that happens I go home.

So for this trip keeping that in mind we did Kentucky first.  I drove to Jenn's house and we made these images.  I've always loved shooting out of series.  Photos in people's homes using what light we can find, and what of interest we can find.  I shot all of these through a sliding glass door using my body to block the harsher sunlight.  I love the effect it creates.  Beautiful out of focus reflections with a shallow depth of field from using my 85mm f1.4.

Shooting with Jenn was a fantastic way to begin a trip.  She's calm and powerful in front of the camera.  Her own self portraits are so fantastic, that I did feel some pressure to ensure that I was doing my best, but for our first shoot I think we did some awesome images.  I hope that we get to work together again soon.

Yes, I see you use the same technique in Temperance to good effect. I'm just getting around to mentioning it now.
