I woke up at 4:30 am threw my clothes on, and jumped into the car. Idiivil and I had planned the day before to do a shoot in one of California's most notoriously strict but beautiful spots Vasquez Rocks. A lot of people ask me how do you get away with shooting in these amazing locations, and it comes down to a few things: Wake up early, shoot on week days, travel off peak season, hike further, have a look out with a secret phrase, and a giant coat. If you can manage the majority of these things you are pretty much going to be in the clear.
So it is with those all in my mind that I drove with her in the dark on a winter day up into the Sierra Pelona mountain range. Very quickly we found a ton of beautiful spots to take photos in the first light of the day. Perfect boulders and desert vegetation are found everywhere, and there was no one else in the park, so we pretty much had free reign. Even in the freezing cold, and draped over incredibly course stone Idiivil managed to get into some amazing poses perfectly echoing or contrasting the scenery.
I shot every one of these photos with the 17-40mm F4L half because I hate changing lenses in sand, and half because I didn't really need anything else.
