Jenn D for The Jungle

We drove into Kentucky on a sunny day, which I always dread. Is there anything harder than figuring out your lighting at noon on a cloudless day? I don't think so.The lake we were planning on shooting at had flooded its banks and cut off almost all of the trails in the state forest of our planned location. Intense rains had left much of Eastern Kentucky flooded washing garbage until the lake, which now littered the bank showing the tide line in the woods. It was not the most ideal day for a shoot, but it was the day we were there. So Jenn and I started bush whacking. Basically pushing our way through the thick under brush of the woods, until we found a small clearing where a nice stand of trees blocked much of the direct sunlight, and I could use the sun as more of a rim light. I'm always looking for a nice subtractive lighting situation for my shoots, and this spot provided exactly that. Most of the time when I'm shooting in the woods, I try to find big clearings to work in, but for this I decided to try and embrace the intensely cluttered spot we were in. I used the 85mm to throw the branches and leaves that surrounded us completely out of focus, and create an interesting Subject/Ground.I hope you enjoy Jenn and I's shoot.https://www.dropbox.com/sh/cm2gsast6t9nk8v/AAADkDxMQghDF388HfI409j7a?dl=0

I definitely think that images where the subject is back lit on a sunny day in dense lends itself a lot more to black and white. It also is easier than dealing with the intense color cast when shooting in the woods.

I really like black & whits photos. You seem to be able to use the lighting, shadows & angles a little more. That being said I imagine Jenn D's tats are amazing in colour.
