Podcast 41: Salvia divinorum history with Dr. José-Luis Díaz
Added 2022-03-01 01:54:28 +0000 UTCIn this interview I talk with the Mexican psychiatrist Dr. José-Luis Díaz about his pioneering field work and animal behavioral experiments with Salvia extracts in the 1970s. There is discussion of cats on saliva, maybe that should have been the title.

Huautla de Jimenez in 1973 was pretty exotic for a 20 year old non-spanish speaking gringo. I'd met a Mexican named Daniel, and with his help we obtained a big bunch of Salvia because it was the wrong time of year for mushrooms. I won't go into the embarrassing details of our interactions with Maria Sabina, but we ended up chewing the leaves and hiking the hills above town. It was a low dose, which actually was quite enjoyable as we walked the donkey trails that connected Huautla with the coffee groves and other towns. Unfortunately on the way back to town we walked right into the army barracks and, being a gringo idiot answered something sassy when asked if we had mushrooms...well, they tossed us into an adobe cell with a wooden door. After a few hours they let us out, but made it clear that it would be best if we left in the morning, which we did. Not my best representation of the US for sure! Luckily in later trips I'd be able to do even better imitations of the Consul in Malcolm Lowry's"Under The Volcano", but those stories are best left sub rosa for now....
