Cultivation Growth

Shortly after arriving on the Immortal Mountain, Mai will begin helping Bai to grow in strength. Cultivation is a pivotal part of progression, but the system is a bit unorthodox compared to other games.
The ideal training flow is this: Acquire Talent Points > Improve the Stat modifier of the stat you want to grow > Meditate and use the Growth Menu to increase your chosen stats.
There are a few caveats that you should know about. First, and probably most importantly -- you need converted / assimilated qi in order to spend your talent points. This qi will be infused into your body permanently, resulting in the stat increase. This can be done from the meditation screen.

Modifiers play a large role, as their name suggests, because they modify the increase you gain from spending talent points. If, for example your strength modifier was 200%, you would gain 2x points from spending a talent point in strength.
Each time you increase a stat this way, several things happen. First, that stat increases, you lose converted qi by the required cost and the stat modifiers of all of your stats decrease. The amount of the decrease depends on which stat you improve. For example, improving strength will cause your mental stats to decrease the most, while your physical stats like speed will decrease much less.
In short, you can choose which stats you want to increase, and influence the rate of growth via training as long as you have 2 things, Talent Points to spend and converted qi to infuse.
All training methods serve to improve Bai Huan's fitness (his stat modifiers), but some also offer other benefits. For example, Enlightenment training will rapidly increase the understanding of esoteric topics for Bai Huan.
Naked Sparring will also increase Bai Huan's martial mastery much more quickly, and so on. Ideally, you want to use training to your advantage to build the character you desire.
The result of constant growth, breakthroughs will also occur once the conditions have been met-- but it is advised not to rush and activate a breakthrough. In general, some breakthroughs have the added benefit of improving the amount of stats you gain dramatically and permanently.
This is especially true for higher levels. With this in mind, it may be best to use as many talent points as possible prior to a breakthrough -- especially when you consider that each breakthrough rewards you with more talent points to use initially.
