Devlog - 31st October - Outlook for my Project(s)

Hi,

with some time to think about further proceeding post SJX I want to share some thoughts with you.

For the next two weeks I'll be busy doing follow up and bugfixing for 1.50 until the official Patreon/Substar Release is successfully published.

After that I have to address sth that I have postponed for way too long. I kept my entire development system and SDK on (Pre) Princess Configuration levels and I need to do a full update cycle of everything (OSX, Blender, DAZ, Python, Renpy) as those program versions are now 2+ years old.

The next steps will be probably

1. Ugrade my entire Development Software Environment

2. Migrate SJX code to the new Renpy/Python versions

3. Take some creative break (until February)

4. Start planning for the next Project (possibly SJX II)

If step 1 and 2 go well, I will use the opportunity to fill in some content into 1.50 that didn't make the cutoff (mostly extended NSFW artwork, cutscenes, ...) as a test case and publish that by end of the year for all patrons that are onboard.

If step 1 or 2 goes badly there is no way to revert . This means I will have to use my creative break to learn a new engine (most likely Godot or Unity) and address a smaller Project until everything is ironed out and I can restart SJX II in that new SDK.

Either way, I do not want to take in any subscriptions from you while I get my stuff together ;)

For that reason I will most likely set all Patreon and Substar subscriptions late in November to paused, so you can follow me until February for free to see what I am up to.

Discord access will remain active for all subscribed (but no longer billed) Patrons on the November cutoff date.

Of course I will give an announcement before I pull the update lever and will make sure 1.50 has been published successfully for all patrons.

I would like to keep the models while I move away from DAZ but that means I have to bring in the meshes to Blender, add the naughty bits detail meshes and and then fully rig and weightpaint them. Then I can finally make custom procedural and fully animatable hair in blender and ditch the usuall bad DAZ hair meshes for good. I'll experiment with that in my break. Once the models are in Blender in theory they could be exported I guess. As to furries, I thought about adding a race of furries, but that would still fit with the lore (some nice space vixens...) but not before I make the model move to blender. Futa won't be in the game because I have nothing meaningful to contribute there (just doesn't click for me...) You write about what you know...

you actually read these... okay so here's something i wanted to tell ever since i first played your first game: i adore the asthetics of the girls. I think the uniqueness and custom creativity of your blender creations are great! While i can live and love to have them in your renpy games, i wonder if you ever consider rigging one of the the girls or several for vam, or release them so they can be imported. Furthermore i actually adore that your games have none of the weird furry/futa stuff in them... i am kinda sick of scrolling through that on f95... (sorry for using f95 but living in germany i am geoblocked from most nsfw distribution networks including nsfw games on steam, so this is my only source at times... as is for many germans...) okay i said all i wanted. :D Sorry for long post could have sent int privately but i thought i can say all this openly. Right?

renpy is great! but if you switch and don't want to use unity i heard good things about godot. however the thing about renpy and why i like it: i am one of those weirdos that games on linux... and renpy is very nice on linux.

If all goes well migrating my game to Renpy 8.x I'll make 1.60 as well. As an intermediate step I'll even make a 1.55 during my break end of the year with some extra scenes for "testing out" Renpy 8.x with my code. That version will be available for all patrons that are onboard during my break (during which there will be no billing anyway...).

Unity is unlikely as of now. If I have to move away from Renpy I'll use Godot I think. Renpy is a nice lightweight SDK and has a low entry hurdle, so I like it. As to extensions, I do not use any, just Renpy and the integrated python version. Renpy 7.x on which I am has some commands that crash 8.x (latest), so I have to identify and migrate them. Thats what I will do next month. Also Renpy 8.x has the new pygame version which allows for better minigames.

Please try to stay with Renpy. Unity is much less user friendly for us. With Renpy I can freely switch to any input method, be it mouse, keyboard or game pad. And the keys/buttons to push are always the same. For Unity, afaik this all must be coded by the developer so most of the games in Unity don't have that. Also all the history, undo, etc. This is all not out of the box in Unity. Didn't the providers of your Renpy extensions also made their tools compatible with the new versions of Renpy/Python?

Yes and no. Have you maybe checked out how the story from "Red Sakura Mansion" (an abandoned, basically unfinished project) links to "Red Sakura Mansion 2"? Basically, something happens which forces you to start from scratch, possibly searching for your lost girls. That even explains the unfinished state of the first game. Hmmm... Imagine the trip to the Milky Way galaxy was aborted because of BB's treachery, you were thrown back to your base because of something BB did and you don't know what happened to the rest of the girls. Nimhe managed to escape from the ship while stealing a few of your bots to buy her own ship, a fully automated one, and found T'Ris working mindbroken in some arcade but was unable to free her so just watched from distance, maybe protecting her sometimes. You meet Nimhe in a Drengarian bar, when she argues with the arcade owner to allow her to rig some sexbots there. Khelara got captured by the Swarm, and you find her by accident, when you take over some slaves from a destroyed swarm ship. From her you learn that BB is still holding Vee, Ylee and Moira, probably training them all the time, but has sold Seraphine to the Krell in exchange for Verity (this girl never learns!) and some other slaves. Imagine having to buy Seraphine back from the Krell... Yes, there would be some challenges, but I think it would be quite doable. You would start with a known, fixed state, just a bit different. IMHO the biggest challenge would be to come up with a number of new quests, so that the game would not feel like a remake.

For a trainer that might be a bit tricky, as MC's progress or the old character's progress skews the entire picture. A reboot would probably be a new character (maybe descendant of old MC) that sets out in a similar way to make his fortune. That would allow flashbacks or even guest appearances by some characters...

Maybe there could be something similiar to Mass Effect 2. A kind of soft reboot with the same MC, but gives space to introduce other characters and leaves the door open for the other characters.

Sounds like an entire reasonable plan to me. Does have risks, but when you come back, I will be here to check out what you do next. Personally, I would not even require subscriptions to be paused, but I do understand many people have tight entertainment budgets, so it is probably a good idea.

On the plus side, once I am on renpy 8.x with python 3.x all the int/float issues that are annoying af are history and there#s also a bunch of nifty new python functions (SJX is 80% native python code and only 20% renpy layer code)

I have to rewrite all file access code (e.g. mv pod file reads...), swap out certain dictionary code and check whether gamepy (used in the combat) still works. Essentially once i updated renpy I'll get a bunch off errors when starting the game and need to change every affected part of the code to a compatible one. Hopefully only 20 to 30 issues. I had some ugly crashes on file access in trial runs but i solved those thats why i think migration might work now

I have to think about that. While doing 1.50 I saw there would be so many things still to do in this Galaxy. Not sure but instead of a reboot (MC gets shipwrecked and starts over...) a broader exapansion of the exisiting universe would make sense. That would entail full makeover of bot part system, trade system, ...

Will SJX II be a continuation of SJX or be a reboot with new chars maybe art style and new system build from the ground up?
