Proof of Life #112: News on HC3's progress - portraits, map, and some cards

Edit*: Added HC2's Neve's portraits for comparison. I chose Neve since she's also a high elf.

Heya everyone, it's N_Taii back from his vacation-that-was-not-really-a-vacation, but whatever, I've got some news on HC3's progress.

First of all, the portraits for the 3rd character are now done. This time, I decided to include all of them so you have an idea of what portraits I have so far.

In order: Annoyed - Normal - Ahegao1 - Ahegao2 - Angry

                - Aroused - Sad - Embarrassed - Happy(Eyes Open) - Happy (Eyes Closed).

Let me know what you think. I'm planning on maybe having 2 more done for each character, so let me know if you have any suggestions you'd like to see.

Last Wednesday, I was supposed to do some light work since I was still on vacation, so I went and started working on the new main map. But this turned out to beso addicting, I've been spending most of my days doing it instead. This is also so time consuming that I only have about only one-third of the map done. Making a city is quite interesting, but also more challenging than a nature-filled elven tribe. I have turned into an urban planner lately, trying to have a good balance between buildings and open spaces, so the map doesn't get too packed, but isn't too big either. Also, I'm trying to add lots of green spaces, so it doesn't turn into a boring concrete jungle. 

I realized the buildings I have commissioned were quite tall, mabye a bit too much, which means the characters are going to be hidden behind it quite a lot when walking from A to B, so I added an option that turns the roof transparent as soon as the MC steps near. This should help make it a bit easier to see. 

To be honest, I feel like the map will be a tad bit bigger than HC2, so I will try to add a new system of "city maps" pinned on wooden boards around the city which, once read, give details about the diverses locations as well as the option to fast travel to some part of the city. I think this could be a good addition.

Last but not least, a bit of background on the city: in fact, it isn't quite a city, but a district of a bigger city. The district in which our adventure take place is situated right above the harbor, so it is called the harbor district, or simply "The Harbor". It is one of the oldest districts of the city of Luminia, and is known the most livable one. 

I'll give you more info as I progress, of course. Maybe a sneak peek, but next week might be a bit early. We'll see.

Last lil' bit of info: the new card game I will implement (same as Triple Triad from FF8), is also in the works. It'll contain between 100 to 120 cards in total, but I'll only do 20 of them for the demo version, since there won't be that many opponents at the beginning. 15 are ready as we speak. I really look forward to you guys trying it out! (reminder: this minigame won't be tied to any of the storylines, nor necessary to progress them, and will be implemented as a way to have a little bit of variety in the gameplay for those who wish to, and those who like to collect stuff^^).

Maybe an ahegao that shows a bit more tongue? Like tongue being a bit out of the mouth etc.

I just noticed it in comparison to Neve. She doesn't show a lot of teeth either, but it feels a bit more natural to me. But maybe it just doesn't fit the model of the new character. The artist probably tried it out

I'll think about it, but I'm not sure how many times I'll use it in the game. Neve's 7 is actually supposed to represent arousal, so closer to the 6th one (2nd row on the left) for the new portraits.

Got it, you guys would like a third ahegao version. I'll ask the artist as soon as he's done with everything.

Hmmm, I'm not sure about the teeth. The artist is a pro, I'm sure he considered it, and ultimately decided not to use them because the wouldn't look good. Besides, when they will be formated for RPGM portraits, they will be a lot smaller, so I don't think those details will make much of a difference in the long run. I could ask the artist to add a third, more "extreme" ahegao though, that could work.

I also feel like there could be a little bit more teeth. 10 looks kinda toothless imo

Yeah i think so too, the ahegao is right for the 2 picture but there can be another level of it. The 1st and 2nd seems to be the medium level not as heavy as neve.

I think there either needs to be a third ahegao face or the second one needs to be a bit more red or have more sweat. I feel like there isn't enough emotion in ahegao 2 for the scenes later in the story

Thanks! I was actually going through your old messages to gather the links you had sent, so this is really helpful. While doing the map, I realized there are certain limitations on what doodads I can use depending on the layout, so I might not use some of them, but I'll look through them to see what could be added : )

Could you maybe include the facial expressions of one of the characters from HC2, so that we have a better comparison? I feel like there was a bit more expression in HC2, but I'm not sure, so it would be nice to have something to compare them to

Good luck and much more fun with the ongoing work on the map and the basic design of the game. ANd please take your time N_Taii! When its fun and no rush the best results will come out of it! And this phase might be the most important phase of the game... setting all the fundaments..

sounds fantastic! <3 also are u going to add some of those atmospherical doodas and stuff we talked about earlier? I copy/pasted all the links that could be usefull beneath. I really think that using some of these would create a fantastic atmosphere/setting for the maps in HC3. The game would become a piece of art (if it wasnt already before ;))
