A More Civilized Q&A - August 2021

Today's Q&A covers the Mandalore Arc and loose trio of episodes that followed, but would you be surprised at all to hear that we mostly received questions about Obi-Wan, Satine, and the Mandalorians in general? So, enjoy us digging into these questions about what-ifs and AUs, and maybe a few "how mights..." too.

Oh, and stick around for the final 30 minutes after the questions to enjoy Rob, Ali, and Austin as they stumble through Wookiepedia and recall stories of Star Wars love long past. Did you know that Luke loved a ghost? Did you know that Lando dated... well, you'll have to listen to find out.

Rob's mispronunciations of Mace Windu are just the inverse of Lupe Fiasco saying "window". Who knew he was such a hip-hop head. https://youtu.be/Rmp6zIr5y4U?t=187

I think the Claudia Gray books are maybe the best in the current era of the EU for taking the Jedi or the Rebels or the Empire seriously as institutions that have attributes and are made up of different individual people, her approach seems Civilized-Age-ready to me

Would be really cool if Obi-wan left the Jedi Order to be with Satine. In Claudia Gray's novel Master & Apprentice from 2019, Qui-gon and Obi-wan go to a planet with a former Jedi named Rael Averross who was Dooku's apprentice before Qui-gon. He left the Jedi on pretty good terms to just do his own thing, be kingmaker on this planet, and it seems like the Jedi aren't that upset about it and still like him. So anyways Obi-wan should remember that guy and do the same thing and live a much more fulfilling life.

Also none of this mentions Luke's very first girlfriend, Shira Brie, who first appeared in the Marvel Star Wars comic in 1982. She debuted in issue 56 as a member of Rogue Squadron with Luke post-ESB. 5 issues later, during a mission where Luke and his team where flying TIE Fighters Luke was forced to trust in the Force to make sure he doesn't kill his team but whoops he shot done Shira. But two issues later Vader shows up and is like pranked you she was one of my spies lol so I guess it all worked out in the end and Luke didn't have to feel bad about killing his girlfriend. Then in 1984 in the post-ROTJ run of the comic she returns as the new big bad Lumiya, basically Darth Vader as a lady. Then she wouldn't be used for anything until two decades later in the Legacy of the Force novel series, where she was the one who tempted Luke's nephew Jacen to the dark side.

I love this podcast so much. So intelligent so thoughtful. Everyone deserves a seat at the table and you all basically touched on why and that's the truth.

I will always agree with the Natalie assertion that this is 4-lahhhhm with a big ole AH phoneme, was pleased to hear her stand up for what is just and proper

Loving the drama that the Obi-Wan/Satine timeline would have...though I think part of why it all sounds so appealing to me lies in its potentiality. Also - I think it's generally agreed upon that Sabine Wren (Mandalorian from Rebels) is non-white, as is her whole family who kind of have this warrior dynasty thing going on (explored in Rebels). Without spoilers - we do get to see her mom near the end of Clone Wars, though she's very much a side character with few lines. But at that point it's the "revived" Clone Wars, not the "original," so technically the point you made about the original conception of Mandalorians as super-Vikings still stands.
