Driving Lessons

Modern AU Raine gets driving lessons, but accidentally shapeshifts out of nervousness, suggested by Kriegerstein!

Driving Lessons

Comments

It's interesting. I've read through all the comments here, and everyone assumes automatic cars don't shift into gear. If anything, lead-foot issues are EASIER in an automatic, as there's no clutch-shift-release to think about. For the record, I learned shift in arcades and only had one stallout when my father tried to teach me the real thing. I had the concepts, but nuance was more or less easier for me to grasp due to having the baseline.

RivCA

"HOLD IT RIGHT THERE, MISSY! "Big... toe..."

RivCA

Handbrake check (on), wiggle shifter to make sure its in neutral, clutch in, wiggle shifter, start car, wiggle shifter, clutch out SLOWLY. Lol theres a reason the wiggling the sifter is a meme. Also, yeah, Ive nearly done the same thing. Scary moment for sure!

Blackjack

Keep trying, you'll get it. I taught my daughter to drive my old Ford truck (5-speed stick shift) when she was 11, she's 34 now.

feralcat52

I tried learning to drive a stick shift. Almost burn out the transmission/motor a few times. Since then, my dad won’t let me near the truck he drives that older than me by 3 years

Trollman906

When I tried (see above) I burned through 3!

Muddypaws

I learned to drive back in 1970 in my friend's 1961 Chevy with a stick shift. There were a number of moments similar to this!

feralcat52

I Remember that one

Onyx Dragon 388

Reminds me of the episode of the Suite Life of Zack and Cody

Vanessa Bethany

Last time I tried to drive a stick I nearly burnt out the clutch plate riding the pedal. Fortunately, it was just across the fairgrounds I had been hired to help get ready.

KaiserDunk

It's been years since I drove a manual shift vehicle. Now even my trike has a no-clutch shifter.

eddi_TBH

Need for speed: Awooo

ThingsAreMoving

The sudden ears popping up now almost inevitably makes me think of Komi-San Can't Communicate, which always makes me smile 😁

Saberbeam

OMG! That was so me, when I tried (and miserably failed) on learning to drive manual transmission.

Muddypaws

Welp, hope their re-life insurance is paid up, lol. Hilarious, Tom! I love the expressions in the last panel. The flow of the mini-comic works great for the comedic timing. Keep up the great work! Congrats, Kriegerstein!

Roughlandin

Rose afterwards: β€œA good first lesson with only 13 casualties.”

X-ian

I can totally see her father helping her by giving her a piece of jewelry that allows him to mentally speak to her, similar to a pocket radio.

Trollman906

Which got referenced in the new movie! Loved that.

Man, if I could help you in person I would. I used to actually teach this stuff, including heel-toe downshifting at race pace. Best bits of advice I can give you are to learn the engagement point of the clutch by feel. Empty parking lot, 1st gear, no throttle. Learn where in the travel is STARTS to engage, and how fast it progresses up from that point. Practice starts after that, focus on trying to get smoother. Once you have that DOWN, focus on shifting. Get a long straight empty road and just practice going from 2nd to 3rd over and over. Upshifts are about timing to be smooth wait for the revs to fall almost to the rpm youll be at in the next gear then ease the clutch out. Downshifts youll need to add throttle to get the rpms up to what they should be for the next gear down. Dont get discouraged, it takes time to be smooth consistantly, and its VERY unlikely youll actually hurt the car/truck by stalling or being less than perfectly smooth. I still have moments after doing this for 20 years, including lots of high performance driving.

Raine hit the accelerator so hard that it caused Rose to let go of the seatbelt.

The Sexy Beast

i love rose trying to help raine understand driving while raine is nervouse as all hell if i were there with them i'd softly rub raine's back and tell her there's nothing to worry about just as long she takes deep breathes and focus on rose's voice while concentrating on her breathing

silver dragonia

I am reminded of the driving episode of Dragon Ball Z. With Goku and Piccolo learning to drive.

Andrew Copsey

I feel her pain on gearshifting nervousness...just had a lesson today. T'is a nerve-wracking thing, and given her shapeshifting conundrums I daresay she has a long hard road ahead!

CrimsonQuill086

Stick... Evil to throw her in the deep end like that. I almost drove my dad's truck into the garage once because I forgot to start in neutral. Good thing he taught me to put the parking brake on before starting!

Matthew Tierney

Rose needs to quickly finish putting on her seat belt

Nerflo

It's so cute Rose was lucky, it's very nice to teach such a cute smart girl

Sane

If in doubt, both feet down. XD Love this.

Taki Kuroi

Cop "Ma'am, I will have to ticket you for transforming while diving."

SCWolf

Go go speed Raine \o/

Ordithus

"...and now a clip from one of this summer's most anticipated blockbusters..." <i>"Driving with Wolves"</i>

CrRAR

Same. I failed 7 times

KapΕ‚an Sekty Pieczarek

You might want to put on your seatbelt, Rose.

Raventail

This is why you start in a parking lot.

Wilford B. Wolf

This is the first sketch I've seen in awhile that *actually* made me laugh out loud! Well done!

CrackMyKnuckles

As someone who drives stick. Accurate.
