This is a new subset called "This Will Age Great!"
Maybe the theme song for that could be "The present is trying too hard..."

It's funny because I have this morbid curiosity with how these "development hell" auteur passion projects turn out, because it's often a major train wreck. I was following the development of what eventually became The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, which Terry Gilliam tried to get released for almost 40 years. It was such a crazy and ill-fated production that there were two different documentaries released about its making-of process, both of which were far better than the actual movie (which funnily enough, also featured Adam Driver). Another famous example of a development hell movie-that-never-was was Jodorowsky's Dune (which documentary of the same name about the making of is absolutely fascinating), which despite its failure to materialize paved the way for breakthrough films and careers in sci-fi cinema. Then there are... others, like Foodfight!, Avatar : There's Somethin' in the Watah, annnd... Cats (2019). The only movie that went through development hell and came out a masterpiece was Total Recall, which had been in production since 1975 and underwent multiple rewrites and directors before coming out in 1990. But remember kids, just because a movie took 12 years (or more) to make, does not make it art.

"Adam Driver was such a genius he knew it was going to be her no matter who came up" so does that mean if he was told, "Hey Cesar, there's going to be a deformed 80 year old red haired Nigerian man here to see you" he would have been like "You mean Julia?!"

This movie was already aging great before my eyes when I actually watched it in a theater last year (yep, I'm one of 12 people or so that actually paid to see this)... :P
I'll give it one positive, it is without a doubt the one movie that came out of the american film industry since at least the 70s that was purely made with the intention of creating a piece of art... ... ... unfortunately, that doesn't mean it also has to be good...

I love how this movie had a trailer made featuring fake quotes of “movie critics” dunking on The Godfather.

This movie is insane. This could only be funded by a self indulgent director because no studio would ever take a risk with no possibility of a return on investment
