Added 2025-08-02 14:27:17 +0000 UTCStarting with this page I changed a bit how I do the layout to a way that I think works better and gets a more interesting composition.
The script I wrote for this comic is done in the form of a tiered item list in a document file where each item is a page, every subitem is a panel, and every sub-subitem is a line of dialogue (with the character's action or facial expression between parenthesis). Not all pages follow this strictly of course but when I'm writing the dialogue I do sometimes think about how this is all going to be laid out in a page and doing this saves me the trouble of conceptualizing it again later.
So I sometimes start out with the grid of panels and fill them in with the sketched drawings- which I feel like sometimes gets rigid results. You'll notice the first pages of the comic stick to rectangle panels in regular rows a lot. I experimented a little with this before (page 27 for example) but starting with this one I am first doing the drawing and then doing the grid around them, resizing them to make better use of negative space and giving the panels with the most importance more room in the page.
