The whole "Joe tries but gets rejected" thing reminds me of the Trix rabbit. He's a cartoon rabbit constantly trying to have some Trix cereal only to have it snatched from him. Then in my day they had a mail in poll to vote whether he gets to have some (and he did in a commercial after that).
