TUTORIAL VIDEO // constructing faces & expressions
Added 2020-08-12 10:46:40 +0000 UTC
Here it is: the third tutorial I’ve created exclusively for you patrons! This one is about head construction and expressions, and talks about the basic construction, different angles, squash & stretch, and scanning reference images for expressions. I hope you guys enjoy it!
Some stuff I refer to in the video:
• I talk a bit about some principles from my first tutorial on pose construction. If you haven’t seen that yet, watch it here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/tutorial-video-38377684
• As always, stock reference from the lovely senshistock! https://senshistock.deviantart.com/art/The-Best-of-Harley-Mask-Pack-on-SenshiStock-com-645292924
• I talk a bit about Jin Kim’s designs for Tangled. You can find the artbook, where I first saw these beautiful model sheets, here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0811875555/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0811875555&linkCode=as2&tag=loish0d-20&linkId=608d632dd9843a4f02e04a64ac2ce408
If you have any questions, just post it below! Enjoy :)
that's so cool! roger rabbit definitely has that classic animation approach. it probably had some amazing smear frames too! glad you liked the vide, Michael!

I attended a very early showing of the movie “Rodger Rabbit’ at a theater very near the Art Center annex building on Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena, CA. Talk about ‘over-the-top’ squash & stretch‼️. Perfect! I was thinking (wouldn’t be funny if human beings could do all the things that Rodger (and others) in the movie could do)??🤨😵💫🤣
Another VERY informative video…..thank you!😍

wow! I'm so happy to hear that stewart. digital art can be tough, it needs to 'click' in a way and getting there can be a long process. i'm glad this was helpful!

I have had a love hate relationship with digital art - I love it, it hates me. By following this tutorial I did the best piece I've ever done, which completely restored my faith in my abilities. So, thank you.

thank you! in my case, my art loses the movement the more detail I add, so that's why I try to maximize it as much as I can in the early stages :)

So impressed how your very first few lines already establish stylization and movement. I’m prone to trying to add that on later, but now see this should be there from the beginning. Great insights!

I tried Loomis method, manga methods and i failed. The loish method solve my problem with the head angles. You are a incredible teacher. The horizontal line could be "vision line". Thanx you very very very much, Loish. P.D: the pose tutorial is 10/10 too

Hi Loish, another amazing tutorial :) Thank you so much (I've watched the one about colors last night and it's the first time that I hear this kind of intuitive approach, and it speak a lot to me, more than every other explanations about color rules)! Can't wait to try it on my futur characters. What is the brush you're using at 15:40 for the "sweeping lines" (I'm looking for that kind of brushes for my gesture drawings). Is it still the Macalabs sketch brushes that you previously was talking about?
