PROCESS VIDEO // head studies

A lot of you asked, so here you go ~ the process video for my heads studies from a few weeks ago! It was a bit longer than my usual sketching session so I sped it up 2x. You can slow it down to see it at the real-time speed, or speed it up even faster if you want to see the overall process! Just click the gear button in the vimeo player.

For newer patrons, here is a step by step that explains my general process for drawing heads!

Some things to keep in mind when watching this video:

ANGLES AND PLANES

When doing these studies, I was really focusing on getting an angular look to the face. As a result, my  sketching and painting process was really heavily focused on getting those angles accentuated! The lasso tool works great to get that angularity in the colors, since it helps me select large chunks at once. More about how I use the lasso tool as a way to paint/color here. Ref is below so you can compare the stylization to the original reference images!

AVOID OVERBLENDING

The main thing I learned from doing these studies is that it’s really important not to over-blend if you want an angular look for the faces! I have a tendency to aim for smooth blending that creates a soft effect. But that softens the geometry of the face and isn’t what I was going for here! So I really had to challenge myself not to blend as much and maintain an angular painting style too.

SATURATED EDGES ON THE SHADOWS

In order to emphasize the different angles, I use a trick where the edges of the shadows are given a higher saturation. Basically I block in the shadow, select the edge of that shadow, and saturate it a bit more. This adds more color and life and also gives more interest to the angles of the face. I found an image on google that kind of illustrates what I mean: http://androidarts.com/tuts/middle.jpg

Hope you enjoy this video!

I used lasso tool and gradient! more info on how I use the lasso tool to add color here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/step-by-step-36570445

What type of brush did you use for the simple shading at the very beginning?

Creative Birdy

Thank you for this video I loved it❤️❤️❤️

Aadishri Soni

I love how you simplify reality <3 so inspiring

Customizarte Tattoo

that's my main tip when it comes to choosing colors! just experiment and see what's working in front of you, rather than overthinking it in advance.

Loish

haha i hope it was a loving and supportive punch.

Loish

thanks so much, I'm glad you like it!!

Loish

The content you put out here is absolutely amazing and so valuable, Loish. Love watching these process and videos and how-to's by you especially. Really appreciate you, thank you for showing us all this. <3

Mickz Clouds

this video really punched me in the face and said "draw looser idiot"

Kiara Ali

Really love seeing how you use the lasso tool & HSB sliders to find the right colours - it’s never occurred to me to try that and now I’m really excited to play and experiment with it!

Jess Diggins

glad it helped! while it is important to be able to draw fast if needed, it's fine to take your time when you are aiming for a good result or trying to learn something new!

Loish

I freaking loves these. they are so insightful. One of the biggest things that helps me is seeing how long it takes you to create these. I know I personally stress about working "to slow" trying to draw at the same rate as a sped up video. Its illuminating to know I can work slower with out feeling like a failure because I can't keep up with a 4x speed video. Thank you for these!

kenneth robkin

nope it's just a process video!

Loish

Is there sound for this???

John Beatty

Thank you so much! 😄✨❤️

Hedda Kverndalen

That image helps!

Rob Callicotte

just noticed the little circle you do for the forehead! I’ll try that. Al my faces look like kids cause I squish the facial features down too much
