hey greg! the full size of the image (with all 3 sketches placed together) is about 8700x9700 px. I usually want the long edge to be around 9000 pixels... bigger than that and my computer doesn't handle it very well, but i want as large of a size as possible!

I always draw from reference but sometimes I get caught up in relying too much on a literal interpretation of it. Seeing your paintings next to the reference has really inspired me to work on picking up more on the essence of a reference than the precise anatomy. Thanks for sharing!

I love to use references as inspiration/Moodboard most of the time. But, when I draw landscape I will use references. I don’t try to copy perfectly the reference, it’s more for guidance for finding a mood and ambiance. I remember watching a documentary of Hayao Miyazaki, and he said to emphasize of getting the essence of what it’s being observed instead drawing all the details. It made an impact on me because it helps me to loosen up a bit, take off the pressure of being super duper perfect technically all the time!

I usually get stuck in trying to capture the perfection of what I’m looking at for a reference, rather than enjoying whatever art will come from it. Thankfully I’m moving away from the self criticism but it still rears it’s ugly head from time to time.

At present most of my drawings are done with reference. While it's not a bad thing I am working to better draw things from memory. I think there's a place in art for both approaches!

Could you sometimes comment on the finished size of your works, like these sketches? It would help to understand the brush sizing and "tightness or looseness" of the work. Hope that makes sense? I really appreciate your sharing. As to your question, I feel compelled to draw from references, probably from insecurity about my sketching skills, particularly on a tablet.

I always love your background studies. I draw from reference but not usually from my own pictures, as I try to do that on the spot. BUT, sometimes you don't have time to draw on the spot, so I've been lately taking more pictures to study from. Sadly, I don't have much time to make use of them. I'm working on that haha

I should take some time to paint from some of the pictures I take when I go for a walk. I have plenty of them use :). I'm becoming increasingly interested in nature-based illustration so these kinds of studies will be useful.

For me the hardest thing about painting a landscape is being consious about the shadows. When I think about them on the leaves on the trees it gets harder to finish the piece.
