Old School Acoustic Blues Turnaround - Combining Lead & Rhythm!

Hello friends,

Welcome back to Swiftlessons for another lick of the week. In today's lesson we'll be learning how to combine rhythm and lead elements to perform a classic blues turnaround in the key of E major. This technique will be excellent for developing your sense of rhythm, while also cultivating your hybrid picking technique. Let's get started!

The Rode NT1a is the perfect addition to your home recording studio. Enter my latest give-away by texting "rode" to 1609.604.7868! This will automatically put you in the running to win my next item, i'll give you a hint, it rhymes with blender splatter-smashter πŸ˜‚

I also had a tough time. I found it helped to just pull harder with the picking finger and to kind of use a 45deg angle for the pick attack (a little more brushy, less twangy)

I decided to leave hybrid picking for the future. So for those parts I’m just strumming from the D string down. It’s still an A7 chord. and it has the same feel. BTW, if you like acoustic blues, there is a lesson on the internet about the β€œland of A7”. Using the same two A7 shapes in this lesson, you can keep playing them all the way up the neck.

I am also struggling a bit with the hybrid picking. Especially as I’m always breaking my nails. Do you use nails or finger pads when finger picking?

Great fun. Thanks

My first time trying hybrid picking. Feels a bit β€œunbalanced” and the picked note is way louder. Any tips?

Killer!
