What Are Augmented Chords?

Hello friends,

And welcome back to Swiftlessons for another music theory tutorial! In today’s lesson we’ll be discussing the origins of augmented chords: how they are built from the major scale, and how they can be used in composition. Let’s get started!

Hey Neil, thanks for the compliments on that lesson. I’m going to make an effort to teach the full lesson soon. First I gotta finish up my upcoming lesson on “Tears in Heaven” thanks for the heads up, I’ll post something ASAP!

Hey Rob, Guitar greetings from Charleston, SC...I just watched the incredible Aime lesson, the song by Pure Praire League.. The link to the tabs is dysfunctional...can you get it back?

Hey Dawn, you got it, the Augmented chord is very good in place of the regular five or V in Roman numeral. That said, it’s really a substitution in music theory terms, I should have described it as a “variation” because it’s still the five chord, just with a augmented 5th.

This was really interesting, Rob, especially the notion of "augmenting" a major scale. I thought that sounded very cool. I like knowing the effect of the aug chords...the notion of increased intensity. When you mentioned that the Caug in Section 3 is a substitute for the 5 chord, I think you meant the V chord in the 12 bar pattern. Is that correct? Well, another great theory lesson which always expands my thinking. As "they" say, "Your the man!"
