Tom Petty "I Won't Back Down" | Full Rhythm & Slide Guitar Lesson

Hello friends,

And welcome to another by request song tutorial! In today's session I'll be breaking down the rhythm and lead guitar parts for Tom Petty's 1989 classic "I Won't Back Down." This tune was one of Petty's first singles as a solo artist, however it still featured some amazing slide guitar lines performed by Heartbreaker's guitarist Mike Campbell. I'll take you through the chord changes and strumming options for the verse and chorus sections, and break down the slide parts for the intro and guitar solo. Let's get started!

Rob, you have such a talent for instruction! Thank you. How about a new Tom Petty lesson? Mary Jane? Stop draggin' my heart around? You wreck me?

Hey Ken, it helps that my fender supersonic, and Gibson have so much natural warmth. Additionally, I'm using a very cool vintage electrovoice microphone, and am also running it through some nice CLA plugins in post production. Those are the technical components to getting that sound, the rest is in your hands; how you pick, how you vibrato and how you control the slide. I tend to favor warmer sounds, as opposed to bright, so I really boost the tone on my amp, and almost always use the neck pickup on my Gibson.

Thanks Rob. How do you get that tone out of your electric guitar for the lead?

Thanks so much Rob! Tom Petty will be sorely missed. Any suggestions on increasing the range of my voice? It's not bad, but I'd like to sing quite a bit higher. Does your voice get better with a lot of practice, like with a guitar?

Cool !! I like it ! Thanks for your work ! Good voice !

Rob, Love Tom Petty, this is a song I can get into, thanks

Johnnie Wood
