Babygirl

(Don’t worry, this post contains NO spoilers for the film Babygirl, because I think you should see it!)

I am on record as a babygirl, and a lover of babygirls (as you can see in this archival photo of Piper and I being shy little babygirls… taken by the one and only Guy New York) so clearly I was intrigued by the new Nicole Kidman movie, Babygirl.

There’s this weird thing when a film or piece of media is made about a subculture or niche you’re a part of. You want to love it, but you’re sceptical. You go in ready to be wounded. 4 very hot people have texted me in the past few weeks to ask if I’d seen it though, so I took it as a sign and took myself to a midweek matinee.

The first two scenes told me the film was made by a woman, and I was correct. Dutch writer and filmmaker Halina Rejin wrote and shaped these characters and their complexities beautifully. This is absolutely a feminist film, shot through a female gaze.

I was humiliated watching this movie in the theatre, my cheeks were burning red, I was self-conscious of my face and increasing arousal. I was sure the couple behind me could see me squirming.

Seeing all of these intensely personal desires and experiences that I thought were isolated and unique on a huge screen for the world to see was shocking. I felt the same thrill I felt when I found other kinksters on Tumblr over a decade ago and realized I wasn’t the only one…

This movie doesn’t have a lot of typical Hollywood dick-centric sex, but it highlights the ways EVERYTHING becomes sex with the right person. If you’re interested in power-exchange and kinky dynamics I think you’ll enjoy it. And I would love to know what you think if you do! I’m going to write a more explicit review in a few weeks but I couldn’t help but gush a little about it.
