Murder of humans doesn’t count as a crime for them - although even murdering a human that another vampire loves is still immoral in their eyes I think. But killing Claudia was Hamlet style betrayal. Probably meant as the final stroke to have Louis all to himself.

Even though he loved Louis (they were together for 75 years after all) he was content to use lies and manipulation (not to mention murder) to get what he wanted. The reconciliation of Louis and Lester at the end was very moving.
