Mystery Question Time!

What time is it? Mystery Question time!

If you have any Roleplaying or Mystery Quest related questions then post them here!

To answer the top questions normally received -

Yes I will play more Mothership/Call of Cthulhu/Mausritter/etc, but I like to mix up the games!

I would love to get Simon/Lydia/Stu/etc back on it generally depends on scheduling!

I find my games/scenarios by being on a bunch of forums/reddits and just collecting/reading rpgs all the time.

Hope that helps!

Depending on numbers we might not be able to answer every one but will do my best, the last video was almost 5 hours long (after cutting down)

Have you seen or played the new board game Arcs by Leder Games? It has some cool dice mechanics where you have to choose a combination of dice that ultimately reveals your risk tolerance and intent. I think it's pretty cool. I'd love to hear what you think and if you're aware of any similar mechanics in RPGs. Thanks ❤️

Howdy Tom! Subscribing to mystery quest was the best decision made period, love the episodes! I've just recently ordered The wildsea, and was wondering if you've heard about it/wanted to do a one shot of it? Would love to see these bands of misfits outlawing it out firefly style 🤠!

Remco Vandelijgraaf

Hope I'm not too late! I've picked up almost every game you've played on the channel, and have gotten to run several of the starter set Call of Cthulhu scenarios, as well as having an ongoing sandbox-y Mork Borg campaign! My question pertains to this campaign: Do you have any advice for building an interesting world for your players to explore and interact with?

Jono

I loved your cross-over with no rolls barred, please do more!

Charles Sturgeon

This is an incredible podcast from the audio to the visual. The whole spectum of human experience. Would you all be up to play through non-official scenarios? Can I send you one? It's really terrible.

VonKeebler

What I’d really go in for is artwork of key scenes like the Major firing the elephant gun at the spirit for example, I love artwork of those sort of moments

Jordan Salway

Hey Tom! As an audio-only listener, I love how immersive the music and sounds in Mystery Quest are. Who does the music for MQ and how do they decide on a theme? I particularly loved the music in Fiasco: TfS - it reminded me of Fargo and Graveyard Keeper :)

I have a problem with the way playlists are set up on youtube. They include the member-only videos. Those videos are no longer private, but as patreon subscribers we do not have access to them. Member-only videos do not play and do not get skipped, blocking the playlist from advancing to the next video. I find this very disruptive because I rely on the playlist to autoadvance to the next video and loop over the playlist multiple times. Especially the 1000YO Vampire playlist is unusable, because it alternates unplayable videos between every playable video. Can something please be done about this, so that members-only videos do not disrupt the use of playlists?

socketface

I'm not sure if he would be into it but would love to see battle boi Alex in one session. Was watching back some old painting streams on games night and love his sense of humour. Love you Tom!

Hi Tom!! I am a librarian and work in the childrens department. I would like to do a program for tweens (9-12) that is an tabletop rpg, but I dont really want to do dnd. What rpg systems would be good for me to dm for kids of that age?

impkin

Hi Tom, great content! Love it all. One question from prefferd audio listerner: is ther an audio feed for the extra content? Cheers Martin

wombo66

Hey Tom! Long time CoC watcher, and last week I had my first ever actual CoC game, in which I was the Keeper, as well. We played the introductory scenario "The Haunting", where I spliced some Cthulhu references in, since my players really seemed to like the Big C. What are some good one-shot scenarios to follow up with that are heavy on the Mythos stuff, but not too hard to run? I also enjoyed changing the setting of the scenario from the classic New England to my native country (Greece). Have you ever done any of that, and have you got any tips? Thanks for all the amazing TTRPG content over the years!

MadScientisto

Clearly, I just had to wait a little bit longer! Wonderful group for Fiasco. Cheers!

Liv Witkowski

Hi Tom! Any insight to any goals/aspirations you have with patreon, or the youtube channel?

Max Shankey

Hi, Tom! How are you so devilishly handsome?

Douglas

I will also buy this magnet :)

Sassanata Smith

If Mystery Quest merch is happening, I'd like a magnet that says "You can 100% do that." And it's just a little motivational Tom who lives on my fridge door. :-)

echom

Hi Tom, no question but just wanted to say thank you for the channel and the work that you put into each game. Keep up the great work!

James Jones

Hey Tom, unrelated to ttrpgs but as a fellow lover of all things spooky are there any books you've read this year that you'd recommend?

Benjo Baggins

Hi everamazing DM Tom, I follow your channel Mystery Quest since it was established, before i followed your work on Games Night, and before on Yogscast. I am a member of the yogfan community sine Lewis and Simon started Minecraft. I want to say thanks for all the good work you have done including the community you are a part of. I would like to see Simon and Lewis together again for some Call of Cthulhu, because the three of you spice up the whole game. I watch your DM sessions once every 2-3 months (All Cthulhu games). Wherever you decide or find the guys schedule to do so, keep up the good work for you make my day when you upload no matter what. P.S Mausritter was also TOP.

Timothy

Hi Tom, I really love the variety of this show, and am hoping to expand beyond DND myself. I recently bought the Brindlewood Bay book, inspired by your adventures, but the amount of required reading before playing is a bit daunting. Would you advocate getting only a broad understanding of the game and 'learning on the job' as a GM to some extent, or would you advise being fully read up on a game before jumping in? On a similar note are there any particular beginner friendly systems you might recommend to a relatively novice GM? P.S I would definitely echo the calls for merch here. I would love to get my hands on a t shirt or something. keep up the great work!

Michael O'Sullivan

Hi Tom. Loving the show. My question is around the 1000 Year Vampire games you run. Do the randomness of journaling games help fuel your own imagination and if so, how do you use them. (Also , have you considered running other one-on-one experiences on the show, such as the Monophobia modules for Cthulhu?)

Billy Weir

Gday Tom from Straya, Long time fan, first time commenter. What is your opinion on low fantasy settings? I'm been GMing a while, mainly high fantasy. I have been trying low fantasy systems: Burning Wheel, Pendragon, etc. Have you run/play them? How different is it?

Kwis

Hi Tom, I hope you are doing well. I want to start by saying thank you for all the wonderful content :). I recently ran my first ttrpg session ever, and it went surprisingly well, I felt like Mörk Borg was a good game to start with. Now I really want to try Call of Cthulhu, but I feel a little bit overwhelmed by the rules. Do you have any advice on where to start when learning to GM CoC?

Anders Adrians

Hope you are well, Tom! I've been loving the content and intend to continue my support in the future as well. Thank you for the wonderful entertainment, it has truly been enjoyable! I believe this may have been mentioned in the last question recap, but I couldn't find it when I checked again. Has there been any wider interest in running Fiasco? It seems like a great fit for Mystery Quest and also lets you get more directly involved as a "GM-less" game.

Liv Witkowski

Tom! I'd love to see you run the Yogs through Delta Green. I know it's not the time frame you prefer when running Mythos stuff, but I think it'd be a laugh to see the Yogs pretend to be Navy SEALs right before they get fed to a Shoggoth.

Rinaldo

Now listen here. Of course I have opinions on what you should be doing. And at the top of the list is a behind-the-scenes set build video! It would be super cool to see what goes into producing these videos. I'm always impressed with your set design, great lighting, the audio quality, etc. It could be neat to hear about or get to see how you create the magic! The classic set build hyperlapse would make a swell Youtube Short too. More opinions. (You don't have to answer this part in the video.) If you do play more Mothership, I think your players might enjoy VR-Dead (scary!) or Cloud Empress (less scary) - both of which happen to be nominated for Ennies this year. Or the new underwater Mosh adventure "In Other Waters: Tidebreak" could be a fun twist too. I will also second the Troika! suggestion above! It seems perfect for a quirky fantasy game with lots of laughter and peculiarity.

echom

Hi Tom, massive fan of the channel :) I was wondering if you'd had a look at Troika!, the Science-Fantasy RPG by the Melsonian Arts Council? It's very fun and weird, a great fit vibe-wise for a Mystery Quest at some point in the future. Their scenario 'Slow Sleigh to Plankton Downs' would probably be about right in terms of length/pacing! (not affiliated, just really like it)

Jack

Hello Tom! First off I want to thank you for the hours and hours of enjoyment that Mystery Quest has brought me. My partner and I have been loving the show since the very first episode. I'm also another Call of Cthulhu convert thanks to the show! Forgive me as I don't know if this question has been asked before, but would you accept TTRPGs as gifts? I've written a few games now using my own system and thought it would be nice to send one to you (not expecting it to be featured on the show, just as an extra thank you). If so, how would I go about emailing it to you? Second question: as a BIG FAN of using character voices at the table, do you enjoy doing them? Do you practice any of them beforehand? Do you have any favourites? This is more than one question, sorry. Thanks again and all the best!

Penflower Ink

Hi Tom! You've highlighted a lot of games now with different systems and mechanics. (D20, 2D6, D100, etc) Do you have a favorite dice roll mechanic from these? Do you feel like any of the games you played would have been improved if the game itself used a different system as its base? I was thinking about this after watching the character creation video for Mothership where you took the time to give different colored dice for the tens and ones to make it easy for your players to get used to how that game worked. Loving the show so far!

Libby M.

Hey Tom, thanks for getting me into call of Cthulhu, super excited to start running some stories of my own. Do you think you’ll collab with chaotic neutral again? Absolutely loved that campaign. Also you tend to roll for stats on most of the character creation videos, do you do this when creating call of Cthulhu characters too? Or do you follow the allocating of stats as recommended in the starter set?

Kirsten

hello tom. since you are the forever gm have you ever considered to play a solo adventure. call of cthulhu for example has some very interesting ones (alone against the tide for example)

DontTrustBananas

Hi Tom! Just wanted to ask first; how are you? :) Second is, is there a chance for you guys to continue a previous campaign, with the same setting but maybe a different set of characters? Btw, Thank you for giving us Mystery Quest, my week will never be complete without it!

Isabelle Martinez

Hey Tom, love the stuff you put out and I really appreciate the effort you guys put into it. There's not a single game I haven't enjoyed so far. Now, my question is a cheeky one because I must admit I've tried coming through to you beforehand without success, so there is a possibility you just aren't having my shenanigans, but here goes nothing: Would you be up for checking out a short intro story I wrote inspired by your openings? I'm pretty proud of it and maybe it's good enough to make it into one the episodes. Would definitely make my month. (; Also, again, it 's absolutely cool if you're not into the idea. Don't mean to put you on the spot here. Anyway, keep on being cool guys doing cool stuff and have a good one! Stefan

Stefan Pötzsch

Hi Tom, I love the content, and the weekly output format really has me eager for the next instalment. I would love to be able to put on my Mystery Quest (tm) Hoodie, while sipping out of my Mys-Tea Quest Mug (also tm)... Seriously, I want to buy your merch. The design is genuinely very awesome, and compliments your work well.

Sassanata Smith

Hi Tom, thanks for all the wonderful games. As a viewer, I've been surprised/impressed by both the consistency and variety of tones you've achieved - every game feels different, while also all having that Mystery Quest feel. That must be incredibly difficult to achieve, and you do it really well. I know you were planning Mystery Quest or something like it for a very long time; has it been all you were hoping for? Has anything about the first year or so exceeded your expectations, or been notably different from what you expected?
