Star Trek: The Original Series - "The Naked Time" Full Reaction!

Comments

Alas, Kevin Thomas Riley. He only appeared in two episodes of the original series. Thank God he only sang in one.

Carlos Stevens

It was really interesting to see some of the crews naked selves!

Great reply -- to add on to that, you see that crossover in this episode also when Kirk, desperate for people who are still healthy, puts several people including Uhura into the Helmsman chair -- how trained she is to actually DO that, I have no idea, but it does reflect how in Starfleet they expect you to be 'multi purpose' if the situation arises. That comes up a lot in future shows as well. Also I'm reminded with that crossover role -- in Seasons 2 and 3 Chekov is often the Navigator, but a couple times he fills in for Spock at his Science station when Spock is not available for one reason or another. Sulu is the main Helmsman (that is, the guy you see the most at that chair). The Navigator and Helmsman roles you also see carry over into Next Generation and Voyager as well, showing that Starfleet kept those roles for a long time to come (I don't recall with Enterprise or any of the new shows).

McCoy didn't either, I noticed that even as a kid.

"Who's This?" That was Nurse Christine Chapel. Also the only actress to appear in The Original Series, The First Pilot (The Cage as Number One), The Next Generation, and Deep Space Nine. Her name is Majel Barrett... She's also Gene Rodenberry's wife.

Hope you enjoyed it!!

The Navigator is responsible for "setting the ship's course" ie determining the best route to their destination, is there anything like space bodies, asteroids etc that they need to avoid and then sending that info over to the helm to be implemented. The helmsman does the actual flying, especially the minute adjustments for close range stuff like battle. Weapons also falls under the navigators duties as well some scanning stuff and just general ship operations. McCoy makes a comment back in The Corbomite Maneuver about how the Navigator's position is particularly difficult, even for seasoned officers. There's a lot of crossover between the Navigation, Communication, and Science stations since they all have to do with using energy beams, scanning etc to interact with what's going on in the immediate vicinity outside of the ship. While Kirk's monologue about the ship vs his romantic life is certainly evident I think there's also some stuff there about how heavy the burdens of command are for Kirk since he's responsible both for the Enterprise as well as the hundreds of people on board. I think the time travel stuff is just kinda there to prep the audience for all the wacky things we're going to encounter in this fictional universe "Hey, just so y'all know there's lots of weird energy and phenomena flying around out here and we don't understand what most of these things are or how they interact. Anything is possible and shit's probably gonna get wild." Leonard Nimoy doesn't get enough props as an actor. It's easy to write it off since Spock is so stoic most of the time but on the rare occasions when we do get to see his emotions come through Mr. Nimoy fuckin' takes it to the house, man. Also Vulcan emotions are supposed to be stronger and more intense than those of humans. That's part the reason they devoted themselves to peace and logic. In the Vulcan past they were very passionate and warlike until they discovered how to suppress their feelings in order for their society to survive. Living for these ST TOS reactions, see you in the next one 🖖

Naked Party! I like the way you think, Bunny... ;* ;)

I noticed that LT Uhura didn’t get the disease, after coming into contact with LT Sulu. But still a good episode.

LOL at your comments about wanting to see people naked. I'm sure a lot of that happened here, but the name I thought always referred to people being stripped down to their bare, 'naked' self that they keep hidden due to civilization and society norms. George Takei has said in interviews that this was one of his favorite episodes to do, and it was a lot of fun. The popularity of the episode was reflected in that Roddenberry insisted on a similar episode when Next Generation started, called "The Naked Now" which had a very similar idea with an unknown virus, and that episode was also a fan favorite. I hadn't realized this was the first episode of Marjel Barret was in as Nurse Chappel.
