Oh So Hero! Dev Preview #33

This development preview will give you a look into new features coming to Oh So Hero!

The game's two developers, Ket & Red, comprise the programming and art/animation sides, respectively.

Here are their updates!

Ket's Update:

Hi everyone! We hope you are doing well~

[A quick note before we talk about Oh So Hero! It seems Patreon’s animated GIF previews are not loading for some users with tracker blocking browser extensions (e.g. Ghostery). We just finished putting together the cutscenes that precede and follow the battle with Bates! This includes 773 frames of fullscreen animation, 3D camera work, text dialogue, visual effects, sound effects and music (including a new mix not on the Act 1 OST~). It’s wonderful seeing it all together, but I don’t want to rush it out the door, so I’m asking for a bit more time on this build—specifically until Friday, September 6th—so we can complete internal testing, eliminate bugs, and provide extra features for player satisfaction.

We will be providing Dropbox/MEGA folder links for all $7+ August patrons, so they can download this build on Sep 6 even if their pledge stops on Sep 1. If you continue pledging, you may simply wait for the usual build post on Sep 6.

Some have asked if the cutscenes will be replayable in the Gallery. The simple answer is it’s currently not possible because these cutscenes require the Lood City Park environment, which is not loaded in the gallery. However, with time and additional programming, I can make it possible!—I just can’t fit into next week’s build. What I will do in the meantime is make the cutscene replayable in-game so you won’t need to start a new save file if you want to see it again.

On the next topic, the enemy AI and battle revisions are now done! This is a big overhaul that may not be obvious, but it affects all enemies in the game, including Bates. Overall, the enemies should be quicker/smarter and a bit more challenging. There are a few small bugs I plan to fix before the build, but otherwise it’s ready to roll. We will do additional difficulty balancing (stat adjustments, etc.) for Bates and the other enemies after we get more feedback, so let us know what you think of the build after it drops on Sep 6!

Android Improvements and Bates Game Over sequences are still forthcoming. More on these later!

I want to congratulate Red for seeing Bates to completion! It’s a huge amount of work and I’m happy it’s all done (—game over stuff withstanding, though that should be nearly done). I’m quite impressed with all the animations, dialogue, and design that Red created. Thanks, Red! And I hope you all enjoy it as well when we make it available.

Red's Update:

Hey guys! Hope you are all doing well. 

Things have stabilized on my end so I am able to focus on getting the next area implemented into the game. 

The lighting is getting close to the kind of vibe I'm going for.

Ruins of resource mining with some messy lab equipment here and there.

Joe will have to navigate these catwalks to open the way to the next mining section.

Now that a lot of the assets for the lab section are in game, a big chunk of the work is now completed.



The new Nuzzle enemy will have a crystal toss attack Joe will have to either dodge or shatter in the air!

Nuzzle is always happy to see Joe!

Most of the animations are already complete! Arty is still nailing them!

I look forward to having him in the game!

Thanks for all the positive feedback! Just to clarify, the Bates cutscenes will be available in the September 6th builds, and Nuzzle / caverns work is slated for a future build. Thank you for waiting and we hope you all enjoy~

I understand needing the extra time for the next build, and I can wait longer for it. I'm glad everything's all good with Red and his progress on the lab and mining section looks good. Something about an abandoned place teeming with plant life and still having electricity running through it is a nice vibe. I already know I'll love Nuzzle when he gets done and his previews are getting me even more excited. I joined this patreon around the time Bates was implemented as the 1st boss, so it's interesting seeing him completed now. I feel like I was just getting to know him, but I'm still excited to see who you guys introduce next.
