So, here’s the thing. I didn’t want another raccoon. They’re so difficult and time consuming. I told myself from the second I got Newt that this would not turn into a raccoon household, but as time has gone on I’ve become increasingly aware that Newt needs a companion.
I’ve tried to fill that void with friends like Fern and Howie, but both of them tire so quickly when Newt can wrestle for hours. He wants constant companionship and the foxes, dogs, and myself cannot offer that to him. They get annoyed and I have human things to attend to that little raccoons just cannot join me for.
So, I put out some feelers months ago. I let all my rescue colleagues know that I was possibly open to another raccoon if anyone reached out with one needing a home. Well, news of a raccoon in need finally came.
This little one was bought as a pet in Miami from a breeder. His owner has been keeping him in a garage with no AC and was told by her husband “they can see in the dark so just leave the lights off”. So, after being kept in these conditions for months, the owners finally came to the realization they could not properly care for a raccoon and reached out for help.
I just booked my flight to Miami and I’m picking up Newt’s new brother on Monday.
This is such a needed beam of light after the hardships of the last two weeks.
