The Terrible, For-Profit Elder Care Industry - EARLY ACCESS, AD-FREE, & UNCENSORED

Hi. Today we're looking at how we treat our olds. It turns out, poorly! America's network of assisted living and nursing home facilities are largely more concerned with squeezing out profits than taking care of seniors.

The Terrible, For-Profit Elder Care Industry - EARLY ACCESS, AD-FREE, & UNCENSORED

I've been super lucky that I grew up in an upper middle class family in a more affluent area of the southwest, and that my parents still live here. My mom has been battling pancreatic cancer for over a year now and has had access to top flight Healthcare. She hasn't had to suffer the way should could have if we didn't live didn't live in a different part of the country. Even here, there is some awful stuff that happens in these facilities and nobody seems to care. We can do better. How you are cared for in the waining years and end of life shouldn't simply be a function of personal wealth and geographic location. There should be an acceptable floor (that isn't "die on the floor in your house after falling because you didn't have kids") that is baseline care, with personal wealth allowing you to take things further.

Jokes on you, Cody! I've managed to snake my way into working from home still.

A-okay!

I read a fantastic book called Elderhood: Redefining Aging, Transforming Medicine, Reimagining Life, and I think there's a lot of really cool and useful research cited in that book that lines up nicely with this episode!

For all our Canadian folks here, don't worry! Our LTC homes are just as bad, especially in Ontario. Right before covid Ford relaxed a bunch of restrictions on private LTC and it made things so much worse in the pandemic. My partner works at what you would probably call a "good" private nursing home, and it's a disaster since covid. Very very rarely are they not terribly understaffed (eg they need 18 PSWs, 4 RPNs and 1 RN on at any given moment during the day to be "fully staffed", but there is rarely more than 10-12 PSWs and 2-3 RPNs. This means that the team that is supposed to be doing baths (4 PSW in 2x2) are pulled from bathing to make sure people are getting fed and changed, so elderly folks are often going 12-15 days between baths when it should be every 3 days that they are fully bathed, and instead are just wiped down with baby wipes. Often it's only when a family member complains to the charge nurse that someone gets bathed. You can figure out what that means for the people who don't have family coming to visit regularly. Shareholder profits are up though so that's something, right?

Great show! I will watch this at work, thanks!

Evan

I don’t watch you at work?!?!? What?!?!? Get out of my head Cody!!!!

Fun fact: If you want to watch another horror movie where a child predator fights a zombie, one of the actors in Return of the Living Dead is a convicted felon in that regard.

oof might not be able to watch this one. one year anniversary of losing my grandma is coming up next week

Dark - but super important. Thank you for the education and perspective. Another option is to put all the physically capable olds onto buses and send them to protest state and federal government sites. There are only so many videos of cops knocking down and breaking the bones of a septuagenarian politician can handle.
