Hi. In today's episode, we look at products and ideas that originated in America but that other countries adapted in ways that are way, way better.

I live in Tokyo, you can also pay your rent and other bills at Konbini. Also, while they have sugary drinks and unhealthy foods, I literally take a healthy salad and soup from 7-Eleven every single day at work.

"They" say that oil is older than dinosaurs and came from plants and tiny marine life, but I guess continuing to say it's from dinosaurs is more fun...I guess? Sure, why not, it's probably definitely from dinosaurs (no it isn't).

Yeah, we have the same issue here in Canada with toilet paper. I only know one person with an actual, toilet-bowl style bidet but most bathrooms do not have the space. I want one but do to the layout right now it is very difficult for power to reach. During the pandemic people were hoarding and stockpiling TP like they were not making any more and like there are not other ways to clean your butt. We have a TP addiction it seems. Even my dad was afflicted and panicked when there was less than 20 rolls in the house.

I agree with Zach here. I wasn't going to ask you about your butthole Katy (because obviously I am gentlemen and know better than to ask a lady about their bodily functions), but as an executive producer I now feel compelled to ask.....AHEM....hey uhhhhh Katy!? What's uhhhhh...going on with your butthole over there friend?

Okay, FINE! Katy what's going on with your butthole?

This is terrible! I don't know much so I don't understand much of the episode but I love ads. Now, I paid you and I get no ads? How about patreon episodes with double the ads?

Hitting the first segment from a 7/11, in Tokyo, on my commute to work really was something. I can attest that they do definitely feel like magic. Interesting fact: the clothes sold at conbini are meant to be for office workers that spend the night out (due to overtime or going for drinks and missing the last train).

Or, I guess, we could just keep on doing like we are doing, and pretend there isn’t a problem. There’s always that favorite “solution.” I’m sure things will hold together a little longer with baling wire and duct tape.

Or, perhaps, we could emulate nature’s methods of clean-up and build systems of large, intensely managed sewage treatment lagoons, ponds and lakes (like there are in a few locations around the world), and use that water. Of course, such a plan would call for municipalities to allocate space for this, and not a few NIMBY types would have to be told STFU, and deal with it. (Also, maybe we could not plan to locate these sites next to disempowered communities of color against their will.)

I wish the folks at SMN read the comments, because I think the Bidet v. Toilet Paper question is an example of that kind of controversy that obscures larger and more important issues _directly related_ to the question itself. Presently, our practice for personal waste “control” typically is to mix a small amount of shit with gallons of fresh (usually) potable water for disposal into a sewage treatment Someone Else’s Problem field. (And bidets need a lot of extra water, btw!) This happens in a world experiencing an increasingly urgent fresh water crisis. It’s true that composting personal waste treatment systems would call for some kind of paper-like wiping method, but perhaps there could develop sustainable ways of doing that.
