America's Toxic Food System - EARLY ACCESS, AD-FREE, AND UNCENSORED
Added 2023-08-08 15:37:50 +0000 UTC
Hi. In today's episode, we look at America's food system, why corn is in nearly everything we eat, how factory farms are bad for consumers and the environment, and why capitalism makes it so hard to eat healthy.

One of the worst food packaging misdeeds I've ever seen is on Lucky Charms cereal, they emblazon across the top of the box "Our first ingredient is Whole Grain Oats". The first time I saw this in the store I said "Yeah but what's the second? Sugar?" I checked the box and yep, it's sugar.

As odious as the children's cereal marketing and advertising is, it's by no means as awful as what McD did: hire and fire Sid and Marty Kroftt (of H.R. Pufinstuf fame and many other children programs of the 60s and 70s) as consultants, make knockoff Kroftt mascots and PlayPlace areas to deliberately attract children. Children who they knew would nag at their parents to take them to McD, and then grow up to crave the salty, fatty, fried mess of whatever passes for "food."
That is an "old witch in the forest with a gingerbread house" level of evil.

Watched (part of) this while chopping veggies for salad over lunch around the time he was talking about the average length of lunch breaks. I finished making my salad with enough time to bring it back to my desk and clock in.

God damn, you guys, I just fuckin' LOVE how getting a bunch of ingredients in a box that I still need to prep saves me time to charge out of my brownstone and out to the beach in this very real situation that was accurately captured by someone's either targeted swap-out or just abject fuck-up of understanding how architecture and geography work.
This episode was great, all, as usual. Thanks so much for spending so much time on it!

I hope y'all make a short about all the stuff corn is in. I want to share that. That shocked me waaaay more than I thought it would. I'm going to eat a few more salads in the future. Keep up the great work!

I was really surprised (and a bit grossed out) by the amount of PACKAGING on American food. I visited from Australia and saw that my family produced more garbage in a day than we do in Australia in a week. And it wasn't their fault, it was just everything coming in plastic bags and hard plastic and plastic ziploc bags and it was just a relentless torrent of trash :(

The conversation about our screwed up food systems could be hours long, as Zbasile stated above. I went plant-based 4 years ago for the animals and for the environment. Because I care about health, I also track my macros just to make sure I'm not getting too much saturated fat or sugar (added sugar - naturally occurring, I'm less concerned about). But all of that is EASY for me. I have access to fresh fruit and veg. I work from home, so I can soak and cook beans regularly. I can even subscribe to a CSA to ensure I'm getting local/in-season produce. I am in a minority in this regard, Communities in food deserts, or families working multiple jobs to make ends meet do not have the same luxuries I do. We could make healthy food more affordable if we didn't bend to the whims of Monsanto.

I would have enjoyed a 4-hour episode about this. You did it about that terrible guy last year, you should have done it this time again.
