True Volumetric Clouds Early Access

This is the preview build for the volumetric clouds. Mac and Linux are supported with only issues in the in-game cloud painting (editor)

Update 14/01/23: I have uploaded a new version which fixes Eve config not being multilayered and Scatterer sunflares not interacting with clouds, link below.

Eve should now look like this:

This is the long-awaited preview build for the volumetric clouds.

Included are configs for all the stock planets, except Jool (still under construction).

Recommended specs are a GTX 970/1060 for 1080p.

Steam deck is also supported and gets ~40 fps

Install instructions: Remove any existing config packs for EVE (BoulderCo, AVP, SVE, Spectra, 64k clouds, KSRSSVE, etc) then overwrite your GameData folder with the one included (you need to overwrite your EVE and Scatterer plugins with the new ones as well).

A separate build is available below for Mac and Linux.

It's normal for visuals to use your GPU at max if you're below your target framerate. Set a framerate or vsync cap if you want to limit it. High GPU usage doesn't cause lag though, maybe you're just getting a low framerate.

Hi, my GPU is always at max when I have the clouds running, and it makes my game to have a lot of lag. do you know a way to stop this from happening? although it might not be the clouds, it just started when I instaled it.

Make sure you get the latest version and not this one (get the one that says v4), remove spectra and other visual packs like it

You install ModuleManager (you probably have it already) then just drag and drop that file into GameData. Btw you're commenting on version 1, make sure you get the latest instead (version 4).

No sure what you mean exactly. 0.2 translates to 51 in RGB. You can mostly copy the config nodes and rename them.

Hello, I want to write config. for Kcalbeloh System, a planet pack. But I do not really understand how the KEY and Color work in the cfg file. For example, the color of the cloud on EVE is "color = 0.2,0.2,0.2,1", I do not really know how it desides the color. Can I just copy the config code, and just change the name of the body into Kcalbeloh bodies?

First of all why are you using the oldest version? (the one your commenting on). This version predates lightning and rain, go to the pinned post for the latest version. Secondly, which RSS configs did you use? I don't maintain those so you'll have to check with their creators if they are configured for rain and lightning correctly (I believe fox's RSS reborn is but it's best if you check directly with them).

Hey Blackrack, the rain and weather stuff shows up as fogginess underneath clouds, no lightning or whatever. I downloaded the Volumetric clouds file and the RSS file. What do I have to do to get the weather, or what may be stopping it from implementing it (Game version, mod compatibility etc) ?

I see a second cloud config for kerbin with higher clouds. Is it possible to make it primary somehow or just delete the previous to make it work and should i change the weather configs to higher altitude after that?

Can you share a screenshot? There's a few limitations to temporal upscaling and the raymarching method used that result in a few effects like that. I fixed a few of them for next version but some remain. Curious to see which one you mean.

Looking great! My only complaint is the random pixelated "sphere" that appears around me when I enter a storm. Appears to be some form of post processing but I find it odd.

You have the wrong version of Scatterer installed, it is not the one from the download, fix that.

I've had it installed before. The only scatterer folder in GameData now is the one that came with the unzipped download in GameDate. I dragged the GameData folder into the game root, which overwrote the previous. Have also tried moving individual folders, but same result, I would expect this to be an identical process.

Hi Blackrack, and anyone else who might have had this problem With a fresh install and few mods, when I add the GameData folder to my games root directory, the atmosphere doesn't load, I can play the game, but the world is black. I deleted the .cfg files from the BoulderCo etc folders In my logs, it doesn't seem like anything is wrong, I can share a google Drive link to anyone who can help. Thanks

Did you figure this out ir it's still not working? Do you see lightning flashes but hear no sound? How far away are you from the lightning when that happens? Do other sounds like engine sounds, rain sounds etc work?

Hi, Awesome visual. I love it. But some obvious things are missing for my part. I get the clouds, even the big hurricane system and have been flying through many times, but I get no sound effect, no lighting, no rain either. CORRECTION: Alright, I found the rain and lightning but no thunder heard. My aurorae are also completely absent. I have no idea what I did wrong, but I guess I've fucked something up. Are those features the default settings? Do I have to flush then reinstall all my visual modes to activate it?

You can timewarp but it takes a while. If you want them to always be active, open the UI with ctrl+alt+0, find the layer "duna dust storms diffuse" and delete it with the "-" button, then find the layer "duna dust storm big", inside it's settings there is a node called "timesettings" uncheck it and click apply. The big duststorm will now always be active and you can press save if you want this to still be this way on game reload. Now you just have to timewarp a bit until the storm front hits you, you can see where it is on the map view, it should look like this: https://youtu.be/uD4em3XhJsw

I probably only saw the small diffuse ones, because all I've seen so far are a general haze in some of the lower elevation areas. Wheras storms like the ones on this reddit post https://www.reddit.com/r/KerbalSpaceProgram/comments/13cayio/bob_cant_escape_the_sand_storm/ are much more distinct, and appear to be darker as well. Is there a way to trigger them on command? or should I just timewarp until one spawns.

Did you see the big sandstorm already or just the small diffuse ones? Anyway to make it thicker increase the density in the cloudtype named "front" in the cloud layer named "duna-duststorm-big". Kinda, both small and big dust storms are on a cycle and will disappear for a week or 2 respectively before resuming.

Literally what i was looking for. i had been downloading old EVEs and trying to find just this. 13 min reply time on a reply to a 7day old message. Fire. EDIT: Just for anyone else that wanted City lights: i got them to work with the current EVE by just gutting "BoulderCO" and removing anything that wasn't the lights. so its an independant mod now that gives lights, didnt have to worry about pathing or anything. and from the 'cube' file, i just removed the parts involving any place but Kerbin. Side bonus, i can see the dark shadows of these Boss clouds on the darkside too.

You'll have to extract it from the original BoulderCo config. Somewhere in there there is .cfg file with the city lights config you have to copy over, you also have to copy over the textures for the city lights and make sure the paths are correct. Well...All glitches where gone after reinstalled everything without volumetric clouds and RSSVE config for SVC unfortunately.On stock KSP it works very well, but not with RSS :( Edit: Shadows thing happens again, must be an RSSVE thing I guess. So that is resolved :) Only clouds that are disappearing are a thing I guess. Edit2:Seems that disabling RSSVE clouds' shadows from the misc config file, deactivated the shadows bug fyi.

Sure: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1zufgkX5ruN9G6D8tVF-05d1g0NCyA6KI/view?usp=sharing Seems to be camera related, it changes the angle of the shadow depending on the camera view...Also about the RSS bug, clouds do not work a the first launch /simulation and it seems to work after the second one for some reason...Also on the kourou launch center that I am using it works completely randomly...I have to manually enable it most of the time and there is a LOT of popup on the ground (maybe irrelevant but just saying).

Not expected no, someone reported a similar issue that happens only with RSS that the clouds sometimes disappear when exiting map view. If you can send me your KSP.log file when it happens it'd help. I should probably test it myself with RSS as well.

Hello! I am using RSS/RO config from BananaMan ,but sometimes the clouds are disappear and I need to choose them manually through EVE's mod button at the bottom (cloud manager). Is this an expected behaviour? Great work Blackrack :)

No worries. So I see you've put the whole "RaymarchedVolumetricsEarlyAccess14_01_23" folder into GameData, inside that folder there is an other GameData folder, the contents of which you need to move to your GameData. So for example instead of having the following structure GameData/RaymarchedVolumetricsEarlyAccess14_01_23/GameData/StockVolumetricClouds, you need to have GameData/StockVolumetricClouds. After you do that it should work.

Hey so I just looked and it looks like you didn't install anything? Scatterer and EVE are still on the old versions, the configs are missing and AVP is still installed. Remove AVP, use the scatterer and EVE and StockVolumetricClouds included in the above download, put them in your GameData.

It's normal, I personally don't like how city lights look (just a texture directly overlayed on terrain) so don't include configs for them. Texture managers are useful for cubemaps (which I didn't use here because they run slower the way they are implemented in EVE). And the other features are obsolete and replaced by scatterer and parallax.

When browsing through the EVE config settings, I found a few menus such as atmosphere, city lights, terrain, and texture managers were empty and lacking configs. Is this normal or did I install something wrong?

I have EVE and this mod downloaded, and no matter what I do the clouds do not show up. I even tried messing around in the config editor, but no clouds. I've tried everything to my knowledge but the clouds still don't show up. Can somebody help?

Hi there, thank you for the beautiful mod! I'm finding the clouds look very pixelated and blocky when flying a ship in low kerbin orbit. I've followed the install instructions but I'm wondering if there's anything I'm missing? I downloaded the standard version since I only have an rtx2060 but I thought that should run it at 1080p.

It happens at set time intervals in predefined parts of the clouds, which makes it look pseudo-random. You just need to timewarp to see it. Keep in mind in the current release it looks more like fog descending from the clouds.

Here is how to do it: Download the first file. Extract the zip. Merge the GameData from the zip with the GameData in your KSP folder. Delete BoulderCo/Astronomers/Spectra from your GameData folder if you have them. That's it, let me know if this works for you.

I've tried using both RSS configs and neither of them seem to work. Whenever I load up the game, there are no clouds. I was wondering if I could get some help with this.

Sadly there is not really a way right now, besides using larger noise tilings but that will make them not look good from the low altitude.

I just got this mod today, and uh... Problem. Half the time as I'm launching a rocket from Kerbin, the game just completely crashes, usually at around 32km or 62km above sea level. Is this a common / expected thing with this mod, seeing as it's "early access"? Is there some other mod I might have that is known to cause frequent crashes? Does my cut-down version of AVP where I went through the files and deleted every "OBJECT" with mentioning the names Eve, Kerbin, Duna, and Laythe, likely have something to do with this?

Having an issue where the whole screen is black except for the engine plumes and some stickers, however when traveling above around 6300 meters, the craft becomes visible but the surface and clouds of kerbin are still black.

Does anyone else notice that rocket exhausts look strange around Minmus? I'm using Waterfall, so that's probably part of it, but the Mun and Kerbin look fine. Minmus seems to cut half of the exhaust off, and the other half has a strange negative alpha look where you can see through the middle like it's not there, but the outside edge distorts light like there is fire there you can't see. I'm at work but I will try to post pictures tonight of what I'm talking about.

Thank you. This version is fully retrocompatible, so old configs will work exactly as they did before. You can have new volumetrics on a planet and simultaneously have old volumetrics on an other planet.

This looks so awesome. Very good work bro. But I have one question. On Duna, there are large white soft spots (I think they are supposed to represent clouds), which I don't think should be normal. What is the reason for this? They appear after a duststorm.

No AVP configs yet, so you just have to delete the EVE cloud and scatterer configs from the avp folder for now.

Yeah that's fog, it's a bit excessive in the current version. If you timewarp a few hours it will disappear and only reappear in a few days.

Yeah I don't include them as they are not to my taste and hit the performance too much for what they do. You have to copy the cfg but also the large city lights texture and the 2-3 detail ones.

Hey, have a similar issue as some of the others above, Kerbin is completely black when loading in. I have no alternate eve configs anymore and have overwritten everything with the mod's gamedata folder. I tried pasting my ksp log to pastebin but it says it's too large :(

You need to remove AVP to avoid getting a weird mix of new 3d clouds and old 2d ones. The duststorms appear from time to time, they are not raging around Duna all the time. Just timewarp and you'll see them appear.

hey, great mod; i used this with 1.12.4 and it worked great; i have a 1.8 modded run and just threw it into the mix(probably not the best idea) and i had this interesting issue. I was just curious if you had seen anything like this before and/or had an idea on what might cause it. Is there some way to get different cloud types, after unzipping I just get 2 layers of quite flat clouds (nothing reminding e.g cumulonimbus) - I suppose I could enable InterpolateCloudHeights and that might help.. But I don't want to fiddle with it too much (If there is some config that would do it for me) Otherwise great work, I spent quite a bit of time watching sunsets over clouds now .. :D

Regarding planet packs, it is up to the pack maintainers to make configs for them, as the process is quite involved.

Thank you. Rescales are going to look weird because the resolution and configurations included are made for the stock scale. When they are rescaled you get giant uniform patches over large areas. For this reason Bananaman and Jrodrigv both made their own configs for RSS with high resolution cubemaps. It depends on the resolution, rescale 2x might look fine, beyond that I expect things to look quite bad and uniforn with the included configs.

Thank you. All these issues are caused by temporal upscaling which gives a GPU performance boost but can cause these issues if the framerate is low. Hello! First of all, I want to thank you for the tremendous work that you've done to make KSP look better than ever. It's ridiculously beautiful. However, I may have a question ; Clouds can look a bit blurry or noisy (I don't know how to qualify it, I lack vocabulary in english haha). And also, When I look at my rocket and there's cloud behind, I can see some heavy ghosting on the edges on the rocket. Is that known behaviour on your side ? I'm using an HDR monitor, and having some color banding issue. it will be awsome if you add HDR support. 2. I'm trying to make a thin haze layer like Earth ozone layer or Titan high alt haze. but it's not working well.. I wanna give a fresnel effect thingy. can you add opacity option to the volumetric cloud? density option is not enough I think. or fresnel effect itself maybe. it will help a lot. 3. I found that Kopernicus ring shows over the atmosphere. can you fix this please?

Yeah, when the clouds are really small on screen there are big changes between neighbouring/moving pixels and the temporal upscaling can't resolve that. The only fix is to lower upscaling (doesn't bode well for potatoes). Or to lower the altitude at which the switch is done so you can just see the 2d clouds instead. Incompatibility with QuickStart, of all things. Stripped to a minimal reproduction: ClickThroughBlocker, QuickStart, ModuleManager, and the contents of this mod - EVE, Scatterer, and StockVolumetricClouds. Skipping the main menu means that the new fork of EVE complains that it can't find ANY configs, and as a result, no clouds (or any other EVE effects). hello! I just got this recently and I am trying to install it but every time it just makes kerbin completely black, I think its conflicting with scatterer, any more detailed install instructions?

So i've never actually done patreon before, but as a KSP fan who was looking to get back into the game after a long hiatus and seeing this on youtube, i knew i had to throw you a sub. Hey, the sky is white when using the mod and so is the ocean as it reflects the sky. Also there is a white ring around kerbin on the menu and map

Hi Blackrack I installed volumetric clouds to stock ksp and it is just brilliant. I'm trying to install it onto my KSRSS modified ksp . Do I install eve and scatterer before volumetric clouds? Do I not install them at all. Do I need to delete any files in KSRSS before installing v clouds? I can't seem to get it to work. I read the install instructions but I must be something wrong. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks again for your wonderful work

Hi there! Been loving this, but today I loaded up and no clouds appear even time warping multiple days. I can still see the clouds in map view but in game it is only an atmospheric fog/haze

Hey Blackrack! not sure how you pulled this off - the only volumetric clouds i know of that you can fly through, and arent just bad smoke puff instances.. is star citizen. great work, and thanks is there a place for feedback, to post any issues in case you aren't aware of them?

Extract the downloaded zip file, there will be a GameData folder inside. Move this GameData folder to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Kerbal Space Program then launch the game

This is the first time I ever used Patreon - Blackrack you are worth every penny of this mod and I hope it will be encouragement for you to keep working on it it and maybe do all these extra cool things in it too (particle rain, rainbows, lightning...) One thing that I am not sure about, the night transition when viewed from the ground on Kerbin seems to creep across like black treacle - it doesn't fade nicely like it used to. It feels like it's run out of colours in the palette, or maybe it's something z-fighting me. Have you seen this happen or is it just me?

Has anyone run into a issue with SRB plumes having a massive pink pillar in them? Appeared after i got the new version of EVE/scatterer but I haven't figured out which mod is disliking them. Just asking to make sure that I haven't broken anything on my end :D

This mod looks absolutely amazing. Been screwing around to make configs for KSRSS (2.5x scale) and im loving it. I do have a question, is there a manual / help file for this one so i know what does what in the configs? im trying to do something with jupiter/saturn so that we wont actually see any surface either way, would be helpfull if i knew what did what.

OpenGL is not supported yet, what you can do is run the game through proton or dxvk, alternatively I can refund you.

I've got an interesting issue with a clean install of ksp linux 1.12.5 and the 14-Jan release of the early access clouds (2.0.1). When I load in, what I assume are the atmospheric effects all appear as black. Sometimes (when I assume I'm in fog) everything is black, but others, only the sky is black. When I launch, eventually everything goes black, then the sky shows and then the ground starts appearing, with only the horizon staying black. No clouds ever visible. A very small and uniform coverage value over a large area. You'll need high res textures with more variety (what's the resolution used here?) Or rescale the noise sizes to get bigger clouds (might look weirdly big after one point).

Feel free to share your configs. For the volcanoes I made 3 cloud types: One at low altitude to middle, one from middle to high, and one high altitude, I then paint the shape around with the painting tool, using the different cloud types. It takes some practice, perhaps I will make a video on it.

Do you have any plans for integrating this with Kerbal Weather Project? It would be a insane combination. The only feedback I have is rain, implementing sound or visual noise would make it allot better. Right now looks amazing but going through it feels blank. Otherwise, everythings amazing so far.

Forgive me if I am making some error, but I can't seem to get it to work. I can't send screenshots of my gamedata folder here, but I can tell you that it consists of five folders: EnvironmentalVisualEnhancements, Scatterer, Squad, SquadExpansion and StockVolumetricClouds. not sure what I am doing wrong. The whole environment renders black.

Can you send a screenshot of what your UI looks like doing that? You should have a small white round cursor around your mouse when you mouse over where the clouds should be.

Hey so uninstall any visual packs like AVP/SVE/Spectra through CKAN. Then go to your KSP install directory, find your GameData folder, copy the contents of the zipped GameData folder into it and it should be good.

So for RSS configs I think you'd have to wait for the RSS/RSSVE maintainers to get to it, I'm not aware of any experimental configs.

Testing with 4K res and out-of-the-box settings is good, the only problem is that TAA makes things too unsharp and blurry. I have a 3090 Ti/3950x workstation and I can be the guinea pig for max res testing. Would love to test an experimental RSS built if it exists and I would be willing to film a 4K cinematic with it. btw I'm aka InfoTheGamer & my yt is under my real name

You can start by using your existing textures with the volumetric layer https://github.com/LGhassen/EnvironmentalVisualEnhancements/wiki/Raymarched-Clouds-Overview#coverage-map then adjust the texture with noise or manually painted details with the cloud painter. Afterwards configure elements like rain or fog by mimicking what is done for the included configs
