The joke about the two men being compared as brothers keeps coming up because they actually do look a lot alike—it’s become a running gag in the story. Also, when Eugene says "he knows how to read Korean" about Dongmae, it's more than just a casual remark. Both Eugene and Dongmae were born into the lowest class—Eugene as a slave and Dongmae as the son of a butcher. In that era of Korea, people from such backgrounds weren’t allowed to learn to read or write, so Eugene’s shock (and maybe a bit of envy) makes sense. It’s a powerful moment showing how unusual and impressive it is that Dongmae learned to read. And just to mention a scene from earlier episodes—when Dongmae grabs Ae-sin’s dress and says “this was my only way of getting to you,” it carries a lot of meaning. Because Ae-sin is from the upper class, someone like Dongmae, who was born low-class, wouldn’t have even been allowed to speak to her without permission. After she saved him and told him to live, he became a yakuza—a group feared and respected enough to bypass social barriers. That was his way of gaining the power to stand on equal ground and finally speak to her directly.
