two things: one don't forget that Maomao is the daughter of the Grand Commandant of the military. Basically the Secretary of Defense. She has value as a hostage whether she's friends with Jinshi or not. Also, small bug fact. Locusts are grasshoppers that due to various reasons go through a physical change and begin to swarm. The traditional plague of locusts. That is why she ate one and spat it out, because even though they look the same cooked (since they ARE the same), a locust tastes different because of the changes it's body has gone through.

2025-05-26 21:26:53 +0000 UTCIf we go back to Season 1 (ep 3 I think), there was a court lady who the emperor gifted to a soldier as a reward for this fighting (The court lady who was dancing on the wall). That's one of the only legit ways a court lady can leave the rear palace. Last episode, Jinshi mentioned that the emperor gifted a court lady to Shishou. Everything else will make sense in the next few episodes including why Shisui had hot water poured on her.

2025-05-25 11:42:36 +0000 UTCIf you remember from previous episodes, low ranking concubines and servants who the emperor has been with can never leave, but high and mid-ranking concubines can be given as "gifts" through marriage. Like that one concubine in season 1 who lowered her value by being a bad dancer(?), then left with her soldier boyfriend from back home when he requested her as his reward. Lady Shenmei is very ominous, I can't wait to see what happens to Maomao and the brat.

2025-05-25 04:48:31 +0000 UTCEverybody has been introduced to Lady Shenmei...........Latom. 🙏🏾😶 I keep cracking up Adorkable trying to figure out who is looking at Maomao in the intro 😂 My girl, it's three people, not one. Xiaolan, Shisui, & Jinshi. It switches perspectives 8 times between those three in this order = Xiaolan (learning how to write with Maomao) ➡ Shisui (catching the kitten for Maomao) ➡ Jinshi (inside the shrine of choosing with the Emperor & Maomao) ➡ Xiaolan (after helping in the baths talking with Shisui, Koku-u & Maomao) ➡ Shisui (squishing a cricket on Maomao's head on accident) ➡ Jinshi (jumping down the waterfall with Maomao) ➡ Xiaolan (shopping at another merchant's stall, she asked Maomao to go with her) ➡ Shisui (at the merchant's stall, her and Maomao pointed at the jasmine tea at the same time).
