There's even some comparison video's of the first episode of Gundam compared to this to show how closely the modeled the shots in this and the original one from 1979. I love that they even used the same music from the first episode!

Which includes shows like the original 0079, Zeta, ZZ, Thunderbolt, Unicron etc. On the other side Wing, G, Seed, 00, IBO, G-Witch and others all take place in their own separate settings/universes. I think Lee was describing Gundam Wing at the end. The very beginning of this episode is a near shot for shot recreation of the very first Gundam ever, but here Char takes the Gundam instead of the original MC. Char himself is only in the UC setting, but he is an extremely popular archetype in Gundam and anime as a whole. In this setting space people are typically called Spacenoids.
