Often times abused people turn into abusers themselves, it's an awful cycle that is immensely hard to break. Both the Late Emperor and Anshi were abused kids who had their childhood and their innocence stolen from them, and as they grew up they unfortunately chose to perpetuate the cycle of abuse and turned into abusers themselves. It doesn't excuse their actions however it does shine light on their mental states and why they chose to do the things they did, but the late Emperor In my opinion is still far worse than Anshi ever could be like he had so many child victims, like it was truly horrible. Aside from that, it's heartwarming to know that the current Emperor and Jinshi are breaking the cycle of abuse within their family. Also yes I'm pretty sure the painting is of Anshi not the late Emperor's mother, with his failing mental state and not being around her, the late Emperor probably couldn't accurately recall what she looked like and was going off of perceived memory and assumptions but the one thing he could remember is how as a child, she wore bright colors which is why he put her in a yellow dress in the painting.

The author of apothecary diaries confirmed that it was because the late emperor's mother was a low ranking concubine before his ascension, she couldn't stop the other concubines from touching her child. And since the late emperor looks like Jinshi... you know. Earlier episodes played off Jinshis looks as a joke (everyone wants to bed with him but now the dark side comes out. Even in season 1 ep 2 there was a military officer who put aphrodisiac in his meat bun...) When the late empress rose up in rank she became overprotective of her son. Then the cycle of abuse continued with the late emperor choosing young girls because he was broken from his trauma as a young child.

I think it's common for someone who has been abused like that even at such a young age to take ownership and assign themselves control in that situation. So I wouldn't take the Empress Dowager at face value in how she presents the circumstances.

Yeah, I don't know if it was sexual and physical abuse but like Director said his mother is definitely the reason why he's scared of "older women" and he likely would've been forced to procreate by his mother as well.

I hate how this show keeps making me feel bad about hating the "bad" characters! I mean, how dare they not just allow what seems to be a one-dimensional evil character stay as such!! π

My guess is that the previous emperor was probably forced to "produce a heir" at a very young age since he was the only one left in the royal family

The cycle of abuse in this episode is crazy. Im pretty sure the mother sexually and physically abused the late emperor, he abused little girls, and one of those girls grew up and abused him. Thankfully the current emperor didnt continue the cycle.

Right episode (just home from the pub in time thankfully). Also, Director summed up the former Emperor in a perfect way.
