One thing I think is under explored is the giving side of a curse. So you craft this magic out of the dark side of your psychology. You know it will bring little but pain, but whatever you intend is more important to you.
You need not sand off too many edges to make this interesting. Imagine sauron as a villain protagonist. Why would you willingly invest the majority of your power, enough to threaten your immortal existence, into an object of domination. Knowing at some level it may make your dreams of conquest a reality - or be your entire downfall?
Or take a witch cursing their enemy. Does retribution really salve the wounds they have taken?

This does bring to mind Kratos changing his own self reflection in the Norse saga, as he learns to forgive himself. A theory is that his skin tone is changing, becoming less pale. Could this be seen as breaking the 'curse'?
