I don't have anything profound to say about the end of Bebop, I think it was well done, but I could also envision it taking a totally different direction that went for the more lighthearted tone of a lot of the episodes - but I guess it only makes sense for it to be inspired by Film Noir. See ya, space cowboy!~

My interpretation of the final episodes has always been that Spike didn't actually have a choice, and he knew it. He and Julia made their choices before. Everything from then to now has been a dream, and now he has to wake back up to the situation. In the graveyard seen, when Julia is begging him to run away with her, you can see it in his expression, he's like he's watching a recording of a bitter memory and he already knows how it plays out. Anyone in his situation might have a choice to change the ending, but Spike doesn't. He is who he is, and he knows what he's going to do.

So, Spike was once an assassin for the Syndicate, which is a Chinese-style Triad, led by 3 people, under the wing of Mao Yenrai, the man who gets killed in episode 5 by Vicious. At some point, Spike meets Vicious and brings him into the Syndicate, also under Mao Yenrai.
While Spike was a favorite for becoming a more important figure in the Syndicate, Vicious, on the other hand, was jealous and ambitious, and in the end, he attempted to have Spike killed. Spike did not die, but instead, he ended up dropping half-dead on Julia's doorstep. Julia was at the time Vicious' girlfriend. She took care of Spike and nursed him back to health, and during that time, they began an affair.
When Vicious eventually found out about Spike wanting to leave and also, about his affair with Julia, he tried to force Julia to kill Spike. But Julia never showed up to the meet and Spike, having faked his death to be able to run away with her, ended up running all alone. To him, it seemed that Julia had betrayed him in the end, but he never stopped searching for her to understand why exactly she didn't follow their plan and come with him back then.

Always get a kick out of the cosplay. Very cool! Thank you for the journey and analysis.
Agreed with the interpretation of "all a dream" meaning they couldn't get away from what they did in the past. The life Spike lived on the Bebop was like "a dream". Spike was running away but he ultimately carried that weight until the end.
Great series. Looking forward to the movie reaction and whatever you react to next!

I really like the idea you bring up of Spike seeing everything through the lens of the past. Makes me think of the time he heard Faye singing and mistook her for Julia. His first instinct upon realization was to make fun of her. Itโs like nothing he had in the present could ever size up to the dream he was living with Julia.
