Sawyer - The Floating World (Phase 1) NSFW Polaroid Lifts
Added 2025-08-01 17:06:44 +0000 UTCLast week Sawyer sent me a reel on IG of Polaroid emulsion lifts, which I hadn't done or thought about probably since 2007 when I had multiple classes under Carol Panaro-Smith at ASU and Scottsdale Community College. I don't think I have EVER done Polaroid lifts with an art model. We shot these last night (and filmed the entire shoot as well) and I transferred all of the Polaroids to 140lb watercolor paper, with the intent that there will be additional drawing/ writing on the outside of the transfers- hence Phase 1.
We actually do not know what the next stage of these will be, other than they are meant to be unique artifacts full of the human hand. I went to the Long Beach Art Museum and saw cool stuff kindergartners did, and also have an affinity for the sort of thin line micron-looking continuous contour line drawings that Picasso popularized, and Sawyer has a very tiny handwritten look to her poetry. She doesn't do technology at all so it made sense for us to make these kinds of intuitive material things. On my own end, having spent the last year deep in AI, Procreate and Procreate Dreams, After Effects ect. I'm feeling like a little organic/ chemical/ analogue phase is called for. I'm actually doing more of these with Ariah and Maria over the next couple days.
