Someone called this “a comfort show?” Yikes. 😬

There are some shows out there that are very dependent on shock value and they don’t stand up to scrutiny very well. I can see how someone who watched this show casually might categorize White Lotus in that cohort. Difference is, you can analyze the characters and their motivations in this show and it MAKES SENSE. It’s actually really difficult and unusual to make a consistently shocking show with well written characters. I’m not surprised people tried to steer you away, shows like this are rare and I don’t think it’s obvious how well written it is until you sit down and try to pick it apart. They don’t try to shock you by having characters do stupid or out-of-character things… they build dread by putting a bunch of fucked up volatile little folks in a big jar and shaking it. Crazy shit just happens naturally!

I like the water drop thing. It’s the same as what Chidi was saying at the end of the Good Place - the wave returns to the ocean

"There's a level of caucasity..." YEP. Whiteness sees the rest of the world--whole people, whole cultures--as a crucible for our own self-discovery. I would add cisness too. It was so interesting to see so many viewers interpret That Monologue as a trans monologue. Guys like this have slid into my and many other trans women's DMs more times than could probably be quantified. These men only see trans women as a tool or opportunity for their own exploration of gender and sexuality. They are "trying to fuck their way to the answer," whatever that answer might be, and we're stepping stones. (I say "we," but we're usually talking about trans women of color here.) I'm sure there's some portion of these guys that might turn out to be trans, which you could say about any subset of people, but above all, to me, it's a monologue that unveils how interwoven the exploitation of trans women and imperial exploitation of the global majority really are--how foundational they are to each other. And on top of it all, it's rivetingly funny and sad.
