This is going to be a ramble about TV shows/movies, and how I go about deciding what to watch, as well as some of the limitations I encounter. Just to be clear, this is not a "woe is me" or "sympathy bait" post. I just like being transparent with the people who invest in me. In a perfect world/scenario, I would watch each and every single recommendation because I value all of you for being part of this community. I know how much fun it can be watching a creator you enjoy, checking out your favorite shows and movies. But the reality is that it is simply impossible.
On this channel majority wins the vote. Which means that, unfortunately, some good stuff doesn't get watched because of that business model. But I just want it to be understood that I feel that, and at the end of the day, this is my business, this is how I make my income. If I pick a show that only 15% of my community wants to watch, that affects my income. There's no two ways about it. I feel your pain about seeing some of your favorite shows lose every single poll. I feel you, 'cause those are shows I also want to watch. Yes, you get to watch me cover a show you love. Heck, I would probably love it as well. But the reality is, I lose income doing that. Plus, I don't make anything further from that investment because YouTube will still find a way to shit on me and not promote my new show to the fanbase that wants to see it. It's happened too many times to count. Band of Brothers, House of the Dragon, The Wire, Killing Eve, Secession, The Walking Dead, etc
The pushback I usually get when I make this statement is "checking out new shows will bring new audiences."Fair enough. But that's only true if YouTube actually works the way it should, promoting good content, putting my videos in front of the people who actually want to watch them, actually sending my videos to my subscribers, - But we all know YouTube doesn't work like that in reality. YouTube highly favors bigger, already established channels to sell more ads to their large watch base. At the end of the day, they are a Big corporation and making more money than the previous quarter will always be their biggest priority. More than making the platform work well for ALL their workers/ audience. In a perfect world, every new show I start should be a catalyst for bringing a massive amount of the fanbase to my doorstep, but that's not the reality we live in with YouTube. The algorithm is garbage and that's being kind.
And for anybody worried about me being a sellout to the majority of my audience - Worry not. Through a mixture of luck, hard work, word of mouth, and how I present myself, my community is something I'm very proud of! Out of the dozens of shows and movies that my community has voted on, I have enjoyed 97% of them. And that is an extremely excellent percentage in my opinion. Plus, everything that shows up on the poll is something that I always do spoiler-free research on to make sure it intrigues me. So yes, you all have agency in choosing the shows and movies I watch, but I have already made sure in advance that whatever wins, I'll be happy. So, in essence, you guys are picking what you prefer to watch first. Again, no worries about me being a sellout.
I know there are a lot of you here who are here for the long run and are going to understand and support every decision regardless. But I'm also aware and understand that not everyone has that expendable cash flow like that. Especially in this economy. People have unsubscribed after polls, people unsubscribe when I take breaks. I'm not saying this to make anybody feel bad or guilty. Not at all. I totally understand spending choices and restrictions. I just want you all to know that every decision I make for my channel has a direct impact. If I'm not watching or picking shows/movies that you like, I have zero ill will towards anyone who decides to unsubscribe. Actually, I encourage it if you want to. You can just be a free member, and then hop back on eventually if I start watching what you like.
Before YouTube, I ran my art business full time (still do). You all have seen my work, and I'm very passionate about what I do. But the passion did not put food on my table and pay my bills; Business strategy did. In the past three years of doing YouTube, there's been so much trial and error that goes on behind the scenes that sometimes I feel it's a miracle that I'm still doing this. FoxTaco and I have spent countless hours and countless nights strategizing and doing different things to make this broken YouTube work for us. Literally doing the most just to get crumbs. We have had to pivot so many times. My point is, I don't think there's anything we haven't tried. This is just the business model for making reaction videos that work for me right now. As much as I want to do right by y'all, and I know you know this, but I gotta do right by me and mine. I mean, I already did on YouTube. I only post 20% of what I used to post there. It's been 2 months now, and I don't regret that decision one bit.
I just wanted to put this out there to say we creators put a lot of thought into every decision we make. Yes, it's passion, but it's also business and strategy. Again, this post was just for transparency's sake. Much love and thanks💐
